Patrick Mullins question

so im not really a soccer guy but ive been watching the world cup and i have to admit that a soccer goal might be the most exciting score in any sport. you just explode with joy when your team finally scores. but i digress.
my question is, how far from team USA is patrick mullins? i know he played at one of the top colleges in maryland and won the hermman trophy twice but how big/competitive is ncaa soccer?
basically im asking if he has a legit shot to represent our country one day or has he just been a big fish in a small pond?
im mostly curious because i would love to have a local player to cheer for when USA takes the field one day.

Meh, I seriously doubt he gets anything more than a token call up.

Considering that he hasn't participated in the US youth systems at all, he has to perform really well, like consistently be near the top in scoring year in and year out, to get a call up.

If he can consistently perform well in MLS over the course of a couple seasons, make a few All-Star teams, he would definitely get some looks from Jurgen.

His first goal in the MLS was a fricking rocket past Brazil's starting keeper. That thing was impressive. I hope he gets the call one day.

he's honestly not very close, but he's probably not too far off the radar at this point, either.
he's kind of "old" to have no real looks/associations with the national team at all, but plenty of guys have been late to the party and been successful. continued success for him could get him into some training camps in the future.
if i had to guess, i would say that he never does anything meaningful for the national team, but ya never know.

Chris Wondolowski means that Mullins can eventually make it.

I don't get how a guy who was an All-American throughout college was never part of the US youth set-up.
It's not like he's some off-the-radar guy like Wondo was 5 or 6 years ago.
To answer the question, it's early to say since our player pool is deep. Also, we may see the big names called in for the 2015 Gold Cup since that determines the Confederations Cup spot.

It took Wondolowski several seasons of consistently being the top goalscorer in MLS to even receive regular national team minutes.
We've reached a point in our national team pool of players, where scoring 8 goals in the first two months of the MLS season isn't going to get you a spot on the World Cup roster like Edson Buddle did in 2010.
There will always be room for in-form players during early qualifiers or friendlies, but not players with limited skill-sets like Buddle or Connor Casey par exampluh.

Yeah, that's why I said eventually. I don't think he's on the cusp but I think he's a solid season away from getting a chance during a friendly or something like that.

Very true. We are now at the point where the Caseys, Findlays, and Buddles of the world are nowhere near the roster, and even guys like Teal Bunbury and Our Lord and Saviour aren't likely to get playing time.
I'd hope Mullins is more skilled than Casey though.

not to derail this completely, but whats the story on Nagbe? Is he going to ever get to play for the USA?
and Mullins is just going to have to really play well for the next 2-3 years to get a shot.

Apparently Nagbe will be a US citizen in 2015. I have to think he will get a shot to prove himself.
