odds are that this is going to be some major reach or over-extended banking law and the people really didn't violate legitimate US law federal law in the US is so expansive we can't even keep track of it anymore. the average adult commits 3 felonies a day, etc.

Yeah the more I digest this news the more I wonder about how they can actually prosecute this. Regardless of personal opinions on the current state of federal law here, can they even screw the FIFA officials if they really want to? (Assuming you're a legal expert which seems to be a perfectly reasonable assumption to make on the internet about a random person IMO)

If it's actually focused on Qatar then they might not get Blatter. Blatter, as corrupt and terrible as he is, actually wanted the US to win.

Blatter is smart enough to let others handle the dirty money for him while he keeps his hands "clean."

Are we positive he wanted the US to win? He's corrupt, but not stupid. I can believe he put his "official" stance for the US on record to protect himself, but knew Qatar would buy the bid. So in that context, I agree, they might not get Blatter without an admission from somewhere.

I just think if he was that convinced the US should have the WC, he wouldn't have doubled-down on saying the Qatar bid was irreversible.

Abc and New York times are presenting possibly conflicting information.

Law enforcement officials said much of the inquiry involves Concacaf, one of the six regional confederations that compose FIFA. Concacaf — which stands for Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football — includes major countries like the United States and Mexico, and also tiny ones like Barbados and Montserrat.

I just saw Alexi Lalas talking about something that included the USSF being banned from FIFA competitions due to "a third party" influencing FIFA matters.

EDIT: Also just saw an AP story about Russia cutting its World Cup budget by $70 mil. Don't know if that means anything, but strange coming out tonight.

US owns FIFA

FIFA better be careful on how they handle this because all it takes is for some powerful countries to make a brand new soccer association and say frick Fifa

Another solid comment:
quote:

This is amazing. European (and most other) FAs are either too afraid to confront FIFA, or just as corrupt. MLS isn't relevant enough for FIFA to care what they say, so the US can't do shite, right? NUH-UH, Uncle Sam don't need no major league to have an opinion or get shite done. This is AMERICA, land of the lawers, home of litigation.
Three years living in this fricking country hasn't turned me into a Yank, but this one headline comes and I've already got my flag ordered, "Donovan for Pres" badge, and an unusual sense of believing MLS might just be OK without promotion/relegation.
LET FREEDOM EXTRADITE, MOTHER frickERS. NOW WHERE'S MY BUD LIGHT PLATINUM!?!?

Just saw on Deadspin that the Swiss Police released a statement and the arrests are for individuals who accepted bribes and kickbacks regarding tournaments in Latin America countries.

So apparently this doesn't regard the Qatar WC
