There's no intent, but that gets called all the time.

The right call, but the timing is awful for us.

Seattle really can't argue that one. It hit one arm, and then hit the other which was inexplicably raised up like he was very poorly hailing a cab in the area.

Yeah. I'm more stunned at the timing. Ultimate momentum killer.

When I played, I was always taught to never let your arms up high in the box as a defender.

Happy for my boys, bur bad luck for SEA.

Once again, it's not technically the right call. There has to be intent on any handball call.

Alexi Lalas is absolutely correct when he talks about needing to amend the rule.

There's nothing about "ball to hand" or "unnatural arm position" in the laws of the game.

From the Laws of the Game (also applies to penalties)

A direct free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any of the following three offences:
• holds an opponent
• spits at an opponent
• handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)

So much of it is up to the referee, and that's what sucks about the rule. How can you determine intent?

Yeah, but it doesn't seem like refs ever call it like that. If so, there would be much, much less hand balls called.

I keep reminding myself that City-QPR did happen, anything is possible.

It's like when people complain about "soft" fouls that result in penalties. If a discretion is normally called a foul outside the box, it's a foul inside the box. Only an English precedence has determined that referees should allow everything up to murder inside the box before calling a penalty.

This normally happens in Champions League discussions involving Barcelona.

Agreed.

I don't like super soft fouls inside or outside the box. However, consistency across all parts of the field is most important.

This loss also means the Sounders won't be in the 2013-14 CCL.
