Missouri Governor Throws Wrench Into St. Louis' MLS Plans

"To be very clear, I have completely ruled out state funding for stadiums," Greitens said Monday. Greitens, a Republican, will take office next Monday. His comments make it increasingly unlikely that a request for $40 million in tax credits for the soccer stadium project will be approved.

Greitens' hard-line stance cast some doubt about the future of the project. "I was hoping to get to the point where this proposal made sense for St. Louis, but I'm feeling that less and less," Alderwoman Christine Ingrassia told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Ingrassia is sponsoring a bill putting the city's funding share on the April ballot. Mary Ellen Ponder, chief of staff for Mayor Francis Slay, called support from Greitens "critical."

I'm not really a fan of paying for stadiums with public funds when billionaires get all the profit. Sucks for MLS though because I think we need a franchise in St. Louis since it's such a soccer hotbed in this country.

Good, pay for your own shite.
This is one of the downfalls of the franchise model. Them depending on public funds to build their stadiums and hold the city hostage or they leave.
Other than the MK Dons situation this doesn't happen with the club model.

Nah we'll be fine. The mayor race is a bigger factor then what Greitens thinks

The best part of this, is that the Governor will give his friends and other businesses tax breaks. THus giving corporate welfare
I'm not sure MLS will work, to be honest. I could see in 8 years, 6K in the stands, and 2/3 of them got free tickets. And about 5K of them are kids with f'in thunder sticks.
I won't go, and doubt if i'll watch. I don't watch the MLS as it is.

This happens in all kinds of leagues, not just MLS. Come on. And it's not like every franchise doesn't own their own stadium. Some do.

Thats what I was saying about the franchise model in general for all sports. So yes it is one of the downfalls of the franchise model being used in MLS.
I know some teams own their own stadium, my NFL team is one of them, even if its a shite hole thats 20 years old.

So you could see as many people coming to an MLS game as we have come to a USL game?

"The franchise system sucks because it relies on public money for stadiums."
"Some franchises own their own stadiums."
"I know that."
Also, it's not like MLS is overrun with relocation fears like other leagues. It's only happened once, and that city got another team two years later.

Stop deflecting the fact most teams in the franchise system rely on public money for their stadiums. Only a small fraction own their own.
This is legit criticism of the franchise system. No need to go to bat for MLS on this.

Right now, no. If the league grows in terms of popularity and revenue to the point it becomes one of the big 4. Then that will change, as owners get greedy and want to exploit the system.

Settle down, debate team captain. It's not that serious. You were just going a little overboard in your criticism of MLS for something that hasn't really been a major problem for the league.

Good thing you think that will never happen with MLS, then!

In STL? When I lived there I went to a bunch of games, one at Busch and one at the Dome, and I played pick up all around the city and county, and everyone seemed massively enthused by the prospect of MLS coming. I would bet that STL could average 15000 in the right stadium situation.

Absolutely.

Good work Mayor
Governor.
I tend to have a general rule against taxpayer funds for stadiums with a few exceptions. There are only a couple spaces left for mls clubs (three if you count Sacramento, which is a given) and I would like to see STL get one because of the soccer culture and its location right between Chicago and KC. It seemed like a really nice project downtown next to that train station. Plus the relationship with the Gallagher organization sounded good.
It seems there will be a fight for those last three spaces with a lot of places coming for them. Hopefully STL makes it work somehow. Also I could be wrong but I don't believe the STL group is super rich. They are rich, don't get me wrong, but I don't think they have the resources of lafc, atlanta, nycfc, Orlando, etc. I wonder if they can pull the $350M it takes to start up without any tax breaks.
