This is an important decision for the English game. We won't see the effects for 10 years, but this remarkable bit of foresight by the FA might ensure the English can compete with the continent.

quote:

The impact of introducing small-sided games all the way up to under-12 level, allowing kids more touches in matches on sensibly-sized pitches, will not be felt at elite level for a decade but it is a hugely significant step on the road to enlightenment.

quote:

The successful vote means that kids will not play 11-a-side football until they are 13, that the five-a-side format will be mandatory for under-sevens and under-eights while under-11s and under-12s will play nine v nine on size-appropriate pitches.

Brilliant. This is what we should be doing in the US. The fact that I played 11 v 11 at 10 years old (the first time I started playing) seems a bit ridiculous to me.

I coached a youth team a few years ago that were 9/10 years old and they played 9v9 on smaller fields...I thought this was already happening, lol

It varies

IIRC, the Dutch play shortened games in tournaments at the youth level. That always seemed really cool to me growing up in Louisiana, running 80 minutes in 90 degrees

Saw a U4 club play the other day. 5v5 on a field a little bigger than the penalty box.

True story.
