Translated excerpt of the interview from Reddit

quote:

Bild: Scared about the next Sommer and more English money on the market?

Heidel: No, that's gonna regulate itself. Never have as many players from England been offered to the Bundesliga as this year. And everything failed because of the wage demands. In my opinion the english market will collapse in two or three years.

Bild: Why?

Heidel: Because the english clubs pay insane wages for average players, that they aren't able to offload outside of England! The clubs, that can afford them aren't interested, the rest can't pay the wages. Alright, at the moment there's still three, four turkish clubs, that throw money around as well... But, the english clubs buy new players every year. And the squads are someday gonna be to big. I assume, that they're soon gonna pay as much in compensation as they pay for new players!

I think his point is a good one, even if the collapse is a bit exaggerated. English clubs are paying insane wages to mediocre players and then they're forced to have them sit on the bench because no club outside of England is going to pay that much money for bench or role players.

It will be great to watch. The greatest argument for FFP is how irresponsible teams generally are. The market this summer was utterly ridiculous.

It's interesting that he said that English teams were offering up their players to the Bundesliga and most clubs were like "nah"

They're going out of their way to unload bad contracts while giving out 5 more each window.

Utterly irresponsible, but pretty much the standard situation for most soccer clubs. Some teams that go down are going to have a very bad time. I hope also this doesn't create a TV deal arms race, where this unsustainable situation spreads to other countries.

German soccer fans are freaking out that Wolfsburg spent 30m or so on Draxler so I don't think they'd be able to handle the English transfer window.

When the Sheiks get bored and move on, there will be some really screwd up leagues and some bankrupt arse teams.

Monaco VP was saying Martial could cost United up to £57.6 million.

Why is this a foregone conclusion? Do you also assume that one day the Kraft family will "get bored" and start neglecting the Patriots?

You're lucky you got good sheikhs.

You could have gotten Malaga or Portsmouth ones.

The bigger EPL clubs have the money right now to take huge losses but Heidel's observation about Germany has already been happening in Italy and Spain.

EPL players are moving to those leagues but often with the EPL clubs still subsidizing a % of their absurd wages and/or taking big hits on transfer fees compared to what's been paid or what other EPL sides would pay.

It's one of a few reasons that I've doubted the massive EPL TV deal would necessarily ever create a similar gap in quality.

1) money gets spread around

2) desire for CL football and competing for trophies means there will always be a lot of great players that aren't going to accept mid tier EPL sides (like a Dzeko ect etc etc)

3) Most importantly, it's not a completely "open economy" since EPL clubs can't simply buy a full roster of Spanish and German talents.

The mid to lower tier EPL sides are definitely adding a few higher quality players these days but it's not that they seem to have much better quality all the way down through the roster.
