Is this a bad idea? 35 years old and I didn't play growing up. Looking for something to stay active and in shape and I hate gyms. Always played sports through HS like basketball and football there just wasn't any soccer in my town. How far behind would I be on ball control, dribbling, etc? There's indoor and outdoor adult leagues where I live.

It's a simple game, just be light with your feet. It takes a minute to develop a solid touch, and make sure you kick it with the inside part of your feet.

I'd say learning to play is never a bad idea. Just make sure you are on a team/league that understands you are new.

My twins are 8 and have played for several years already. Just from watching them and their love is why I started watching professional and posting here so I could explain things to them. I've read enough teaching them that I know the correct ways to play, I'm just concerned how that'll translate to playing with other adults.

Get with a team that knows you are new to playing and is willing to help you.

In an adult rec league, a good work rate defensively can help make up any deficiencies with the ball in terms of fitting in with a team. If you aren't skilled, just don't loaf around.

I don't know about your local league, but my league has 4 divisions (D1, D2, D3, D4). 1 and 2 are typically the more skilled divisions. D3 and 4 tend to be more coed, over 30, and has more inexperienced players.

Join one with older people playing. Most adult leagues have divisions.

practice passing the ball with your kids before you go out there.

Playing defense at first prob wouldn't be a bad idea if you understand positioning and getting goal side.

The coed leagues I play in have no offisded and no slide tackling. So you have to adjust to that.

I didn't really start playing until late in high school. I went and played pick up with mostly international students at the university in my city. I was really terrible at first, but I just didn't stop running and I always made sure to stay back or get back to defend. If you work hard, I doubt you'll have a ton of problems as long as you're not playing in a super competitive league on a super competitive team. Just work really hard and don't do anything fancy. Keep the ball moving.

You probably will never be good on the ball but you can contribute to a team if you're a decent athlete. Just play in the back and throw your weight around.

6'3" 260 lbs. Shouldn't be a problem.
I'm about to do a month of Camp Gladiator to get started then I'll transition into soccer once I lose some of the weight and get my cardio better.

Yea dude, just drop a little weight and get in shape and you can rough some folks up. I love soccer but there's a lot of vag's that play it, especially the Latino and Asian teams, and it's fun to impose yourself on them.

Also at 6' 3" learn how to head the ball and get in the box on corners and long throw ins. That can be your offensive contribution. It ain't "beautiful" but it's pragmatic.

I always loved football and tennis growing up because of the shite talking, but soccer as a mid-20's male is the easiest sport ever to rile up people in.

Yea I'm 34 and have played many sports at many ages but the last 5 or 6 years playing adult soccer has been BY FAR the most confrontational of any of them.

The best way to build foot skills is Coerver drills. There are a bunch on Youtube.

Stretch a lot before you play, lots of unnatural movements and it's easy to tweak just about anything from waist down.

Yeah, stretch. If you aren't used to kicking the ball, you can go out there and pull stuff.

Stretch a lot and warm up slowly. Don't be a weekend warrior who plays like the cup is on the line and tears an Achilles.
