What are your thoughts on this potential move? Tbh I'm not very well versed with Sunderland's club. I guess I would rather see him stay put for another season leading up to the WC, continuing to build up his confidence, and then make a move in the summer of 2014.

Hypothetical, if he were to make a move this summer, what clubs do you think might be a good fit?

Anyway, interested in your thoughts. Thanks.

If Jozy were to move to the EPL Sunderland would be a good spot for him. Di Cano doesn't like the strikers currently on the team so if he brings in Jozy I would expect Jozy to be the first choice striker. That being said Jozy is already in good situation were he gets plenty of playing time. Moving clubs is a always a risk and I don't know if Jozy should risk it during a World Cup year.

I think since the dutch league is a more attacking focused league and generally criticized for a lack of defense, Jozy won't get many looks from big time clubs before asserting that he can score against defenses of a higher caliber. So if he does move to Sunderland and shows that he can score against EPL quality defenders, then he will draw attention from better sides.

Of course his success will hinge on teammates play and ability to serve him the ball. But we've seen what he can do with decent service.

I don't care for sunderland, but . at least he would get plenty of first team action and I'd actually get to watch some of his games.

I like it. Sessegnon and Larsson would provide good enough service. Plus, we would get to watch Jozy play occasionally outside of low quality highlight videos.

Plus it would offer Jozy the opportunity to prove himself on a higher level. I think the competitor in him would want this.

You say this as if he has yet to play in the EPL.

He essentially did not.

From the British media:

AZ Alkmaar and USA siirker Jozy Altidore is wanted by Sunderland, despite failing to impress in the British game when on loan to Hull four years ago.

I think Jozy wants another chance.

jozy was still pretty young and had only been successful with the red bulls when he went to Hull. the more i read about it, the more sunderland seems like a good fit for him.

Jozy must have been 19 or 20 when he was at Hull. He has come a long way since then. If he wants to go to the Premiership, then Sunderland is about as good of a place as he can land.

What? He played very well for Hull. He did everything you could do with a very poor team who couldn't provide him with the ball in dangerous situations. He was superb with his back towards goal. I watched nearly every game of his that season. He didn't score very often, but no one on that Hull team did. Even a proven goalscorer like Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink struggled. Hell the leading scorer for that team was Stephen Hunt who scored six goals. What Altidore did was to hold up the ball in up the field, and earn foul after foul. He was fouled 57 times that season. Again, he played very well given the circumstances.

Jozy wouldn't be the player he is today without that spell at Hull. But a lot of people look only to the result and not process, and thus miss the big picture when it comes to player development.

I completely get what you are saying.

But now he has another chance with potential for tangible productive results...as in scoring, not just big picture, development and growth results.

There is a group of people out there that think Jozy cannot score against tough defense. He has been on a streak with his latest form for USA and with this recent year in the Eredivisie.

This seems like a good step to take on his natural progression as a player. Even if Sunderland is not exactly sexy.

I don't like this as a potential landing spot for Jozy because they finished 17th last year. They are likely to be relegated next year, and the worst thing for a player's development is constantly moving around from club to club. If they are relegated, Jozy is going to have to join yet another team after the World Cup, and he will be put in a tough position because he will be joining a new team after a very tiring summer.

Best for Jozy if he either stays at AZ or goes to a team that guarantee him playing time and a top 15 league finish.

The stakes would be high, no doubt. If Sunderland brings Jozy aboard, they are looking for him to score goals. If he can't find the back of the net and they end up being relegated, it would be a disaster all around.

Still, he would get playing time and they would definitely get a chance to finish in the top 15. If they happened to finish around 12-14, the season would be considered a success and if Jozy assisted in that then his stock and confidence would rise even more.

Its not ideal by any means, but it does offer opportunities.

This. Also, that Hull team was awful and gave him no service. IIRC, many of his appearances were subs.

I know I had the most massive boner for that first Hull / Chelsea game.

Altidore had just been loaned there and it was the first EPL game on ESPN.

Hull was pretty awful though. I think Jozy would have much better production for Sunderland.

Thank you. People shite on Jozy for his time at Hull, but this just shows me that they were only looking at wiki stats instead of watching the games. He was usually the most threatening looking player on the field. He only scored once in league play, sure, but he was 19 and hadn't gotten serious playing time over the year prior. Did y'all watch his games against Chelsea and Man City? He was awesome.

The biggest disappointment for me, as an American fan, in regards to Jozy's experience at Hull was his last game where he got sent off.

I watched a lot of those games when he was at Hull. My impression was that he wasn't really ready for the EPL yet, and though he really struggled for form, I think it was clear that he had the tools. That Hull team he came into was truly awful though, and his form was pretty weak at that time (I believe that loan was after the failed Xerez loan).

The only disappointing thing about Jozy head butting Allan Hutton was that he didn't make better contact.
