Is this blatant stupidity or am I missing something?

Spain has established itself as the premier footballing country in the world and their reign shows no signs of slowing down. From the Euros to the WC to the Champions League down to Bilbao thrashing United in the Europa league.

Their domestic league is now populated with teams that play the tiki-taka style with greater success than expected due to their clubs' budgets. They have the players certainly, but more importantly, they all are playing this style now and it is dominating everyone. At all levels.

That said, the country is also in a massive recession and that extends to most of the professional clubs in Spain.

Does all of this not seem like a super easy formula for how an English team(s) can take over world football? Why doesn't a team like Liverpool, Tottenham, Villa- whoever, bring in Bielsa and learn to play the Spanish system with some of their players and some lesser known Spanish players. Give him control to the academy and let him bring through young players that fit his style while recruiting accordingly.

It's clear as day that this is THE best way of playing soccer in current times, so why don't some of these teams that are so close to the top do this?

Money would beget money at that point and most importantly, you could build cheaply and internally.

If this was all confusing, it's because I'm on ambien so I apologize.

Hopefully some of this was clear, if not I'll clarify further later.

Just speculation, but I get the feeling the English are kind of stubborn and really want "English football" to retain its "English" feel.

Yeah, it does seem dumb. It's not all English clubs, though. Arsenal comes across as Barça-lite sometimes, and they do try to produce their own talent.

Swansea tries to play similarly, and for a club that just got promoted I would have to say they are doing pretty well, their recent form notwithstanding.

Wait a second...what's wrong with English clubs attempting to preserve their distinct brand of soccer? If every nation/region abandoned their style of play and pursued that of the front runner, evolution in the game would cease to exist. I particularly enjoy the type of soccer played in England and hope the physicality is never eradicated for the sake of touch passing.

That's cool. I just hope you aren't rooting for English teams against Spanish ones lately. Also, isn't pursuing what works and adapting your style of play actually the definition of evolution?

You've got this backwards.. if they stick to their "same ol same ol" THAT'S where the evolution ceases to exist.. it's the pursuit of perfection that drives the game forward.

i think over a season in england it wouldn't be as spectacular as the bilbao v. Man U game

i think the difference in refereeing is a major one, and the english refs let a LOOOT more physicality go

how does preserving an "ancient" form a soccer help stimulate evolution in the game?

Is it bad that when I read this I read "soccer" in the funny way that the guys on Men In Blazers say it? (i.e. I think they're making fun of the name)

Interesting question... You've seen earlier this year that some clubs (Chelsea) dont have the patience to implement a "new system" in the "win now" world of European football.

However, I'm with you... outside CL, looking in. If we were ever going to implement a new system, now would be the time... But, it appears we are being built in the exact opposite direction...

question... if Roberto Martinez keeps Wigan up, has he earned a chance at a bigger club? (he did look at aston villa and turned it down. Smart man)

the way they beat United was no fluke, and they deserved to get points at Stamford Bridge even though they didn't.

it would be ironic if he's the next manager of a team that once beat his 9-1 or a bigger Spanish club not named Madrid or Barcelona

Bigger than Wigan? Absolutely.

I agree that Spain is playing the best football right now, and it's not close. That said, I'd rather watch English football than Spanish football. It all comes down to the level of physicality. English soccer is much more physical, which is why someone like Wayne Rooney flourishes. This doesn't work on the International stage because of the way referees call it. Spanish football is a beautiful, fluid form while English football is a few guys duking it out outside of the pub.

I'd rather a more physical, raw game for the same reason I would enjoy driving a classic muscle car just as much or more than a fancy Italian sports car.

Yes, there is a place in this world for running in a straight line, and the whole thing is over in a few seconds.

Damn, your girlfriend must really be happy.

First of all, I don't know where you heard about my premature ejaculation issues, but come on, man. Leave them out of it.

All of my inadequacies aside, the English game isn't that boring. Not to mention, the level of play of the forwards in the La Liga right now is unseen. I'm always impressed by them. My distaste for Spanish teams may also stem from never having an opponent not named Real Madrid or FC Barcelona on FIFA12 and watching the defense of my Fulham or Bolton teams crumble at the last minute. I haven't raged over a game since I was 16 until playing FIFA12 on Head to Head seasons this year in which I turned a perfectly good Xbox remote into spare parts for the new one I bought. It's all that god damned Lionel Messi's fault.

There is nothing boring about some of the EPL matches, I never said there was.

There just is no comparison between the two.

I liken the EPL to a slovenly big puncher, and La Liga to Ali.

Yeah, Ali could get tagged, but rarely will it happen. Rarely.

You really think United didn't want to purposely LOSE their europa league game?

Spain has 2 decent teams, the rest are pretty poor in quality really. You need to realize nobody cares about Europa league, aside from Germany, and now apparently Spain. Their model is unsustainable, i'm not sure why people even bother watching. Until they get revenue sharing, I can with 100% certainty, predict the next 10 champions with only 20 guesses.
