It's not even being good. We just have to be better than shite like CONCACAF and we can't do that.

Unlike other sports, there are actually more than five countries that care about soccer, breh.

Because we don't believe that soccer development is different from other sports. Athleticism is secondary if the technique to use the ball isn't there. We do a terrible job of putting our athletes into good positions. Everything in the sport is about technique with the ball.

We got spoiled during that 2009-10 run. We think we're a lot better than we are and haven't really adapted or changed since then.

I really think that it's because our youth system prices out a good portion of the potential talent for financial reasons (pay to play).

You box out such a big portion of your talent pool, you have less to pick from as they get older.

Baseball is heading the same way in this country.

I just don't understand how a nation that produces:

Russell Westbrook
Michael Jordan
Aaron Rodgers
Patrick Peterson
OBJ
Bryce Harper
LBJ

etc etc etc

Can't field at worst a top 20 world team. I just can't understand this.

Why play in MLS for $75k a year when you can be a practice squad NFL player for $350k? Hopefully players, especially our ones in Germany, show that there are some talented young Americans and some kids get a chance, but until then our best athletes will keep choosing the big 3 sports.

Because athleticism isn't what makes a good soccer team.

It's technique, organization, and finesse.

So essentially, MLS is going to have to become a stronger league, maybe even good enough to be included in Champions League someday?

The best the MLS could hope for is being included in maybe the Asian Champions League lol. Nobody wants to see DC United getting ran by Barcelona 10-0 at the half.

We need better youth development. If MLS becomes elite, it might because it has money to buy the best players and not the best youth players developing into stars. Youth development needs to be above everything.

Not necessarily, but the financial and travel burden put on parents is outrageous.
We should have regional pools associated with MLS who provides a financial relief.

We need to come together under the MLS umbrella, and that takes leadership, something US soccer woefully lacks.

Think Joe Alleva, but worse.

I don't understand how someone who claims to watch as much soccer as you do doesn't get how development of technique in soccer, not athletes, is what's holding us back.

We need US soccer and MLS to get really fricking serious and work together in youth development. All of our best players go elsewhere to get better. That’s not the problem. Pulisic and Mckennie and these other young stars will find their way to big clubs in Europe. It’s the next tier of players that need to be better developed on home soil. MLS has certainly improved other CONCACAF nations by giving opportunities to their players that previously didn’t exist. We need a partnership between US soccer and MLS to set goals for having X number of coaches per youth academy and have them obtain certain coaching credentials. Require the academies to keep a large portion of the academies as US eligible players. Set goals. Achieve the goals. Reap the rewards.

I’ve only been into soccer in like the last 3-4 years.

Do you have me confused with someone else? I’ve never claimed what you just stated.

No soccer has to become a viable option for all kids. It's the whole anti-pay to play argument. Let's face it, a large portion of our best athletes in football and basketball come from poor backgrounds, and use sports to get out poverty. Making soccer pay to play you exclude those kids and severely limit the talent pool. So while some kid who could be the next world class striker is picking a sport to focus on, soccer is exclude because he doesn't have the $1000 needed to play on a club team, and can play rec basketball for $25.

Also, no European league really taking American kids serious means they aren't developing under the top coaches. Players like Pulisic, Brooks, Wood, CCV, Miazga, McKennie, Wright, and a few more hopefully change their views and open up more opportunities for American kids.

So it’s up to MLS & USS to come together to bolster youth soccer as well as retain these players to MLS.

Then what?

Didn’t think about that.

So there’s basically no way poor kids can play. Which is basically the majority of the list I just posted up there.
