"Donovan would have made that"

WE'RE GOING TO THE QUARTERFIN... nevermind

My favorite part is the chosen picture, showing Van Buyten already signaling that Wondo's field goal kick is good

Also... but still

Should have never been on the team and took LD's spot

If we didn't bring LD, in his place should have been Boyd not Wondo.

All these people saying he should be there blah blah blah. The guy is a poacher and couldn't even do that right on the big stage. He is an MLS journeyman(nothing wrong with that) but he isn't the quality we need at that level. He made his name on scrub teams in the gold cup.

This is complete 20/20 hindsight. Leave Donovan out of it, because you could have brought him and still brought Wondo to be in exactly the spot Wondo was in with a chance to win the game.
Wondo has made a career of being in the right spot and burying the shot. It's b.s. to act like it was a no-brainer not to have brought him just because he happened to miss that one shot. He got the right spot at the right time but missed it when his career would lead one to believe he would have made it.

I thought it was a mistake to bring Wondo too but only because I thought it unlikely that he would ever end up in that kind of position with a chance to win a game. If we had known that, I don't think many of us would have predicted that he would miss it.

Not for me I said this the day the team was announced.

Klins said LD was a forward, and Wondo beat him out.

He's not the quality we need. Watch him vs any decent team at the international level.

I thought we would never play honestly.

Can we just put the Donovan would have made it had he had been there argument to rest. It's stupid, subjective, and is annoying to still have posts about it 7 months later

This post has been updated to correct errors: USA’s World Cup match against Belgium was in the Round of 16, not the quarterfinals. Also, Houston did not trade for Wondolowski in 2006; Earthquake players and coaches relocated to the Dynamo after the 2005 MLS season.

jesus christ. this guy must have really known his stuff

I remember when that play happened i didnt immediately have the "oh, what could have been" moment because there wasnt one second that i believed he would net that ball. And that makes me sad.

I remember he missed an even easier shot in the 2011 Gold Cup. Might have been against Panama.

Chill out there, mate. Mentioning Donovan was merely a segue and not trying to rustle any jimmies.

Your post was absolutely correct, but Wondo wasn't on the team because JK thinks Wondo is better than Landon Donovan. He was on the team because he is good at getting in that kind of position and burying that shot. He failed to do what everyone would have expected him to do (correct me if I'm wrong, MLS watchers. Is Wondo not good at being in position to poach goals and then making the shot?).

It's crazy to me that people still don't understand that Donovan was left off the team because he and JK don't see eye to eye and because Landon's words and form prior to the WC gave JK an excuse to leave him off. Nobody (JK included) thinks that Wondo is better than Landon. JK just didn't want Landon on the team because he thought the negatives outweighed the positives.
It's also funny to see people act like JK created this idea of Donovan as a player who lacked the kind of hunger and commitment JK says he wants in players.

It saturates this board. I wish we could all move on. We had a great WC and it is something to build on. The time to turn the page is long past here.

I like how they gave him cold, dead eyes. It really brings me back to where I was emotionally when he sent that one into the favela.

As time passes, I don't harbor much anger at Wondo.

To be a realist, Courtois is FREAKING MASSIVE and was on point on that day. Every bit as good as Timmy then, even though he saw fewer shots.

To bury that shot, Wondo needed to get it lower and from where he made the run, probably more towards the center of the goal - right into Courtois' wheelhouse. Wondo had a really small hole to place that shot (very upper corner) from a tight distance (Courtois is closing everything to his Wondo's left), and he just hit it a bit too high and wide. And Wondo's momentum is closing his upper 90 window as well, because his body is pushing him left. It *looks* like a simple finish, but it really isn't. You can see in the picture - hit it six inches lower and Courtois' foot probably gets it.

There's a very good chance that if Wondo hits it where he would have the most success - Courtois would have taken it right off of his foot. That's definitely where Courtois is headed.

Probably the best thing that Wondo could have done was try to slide left with the ball, and let Courtois' momentum take him past the play and finish with the left foot. There should have been defenders trailing to clean that up, but he was very much open. That's what Dempsey's indicating in the gif.

Courtois was going to be damned near impossible to beat on that day. The main reason Green scored is because it hit off his toe and it tailed away from Courtois. If he hits it with his laces, he hits it right into Courtois' chest.

Wondo's miss wasn't the biggest of the game - it was the free kick.

Beautifully executed and INCH PERFECT passes from (hey!) Bradley and (hey!) Wondolowski. It's Clint's donkey/Eddie Johnson first touch and minimal burst that dooms an otherwise perfect free kick. THAT was our best chance to score in the match. Good control there and it's an easy side foot finish with the left or the right. Then, you're onto PKs with a goalkeeper who's hair (uhh... beard) is on fire and all of the momentum from scoring two late goals.
