Going to the World Cup in Brazil

what are some of the better venues outside of Rio that should be considered?

You'll likely want to stay in the south since Brazil is too big to really travel to multiple cities all over the country in a week. I'd probably recommend finding places near Rio to visit (day trips), and staying in Rio for matches.

Sao Paulo would be another option relatively close to Rio.

For a week? An exaggerated number unless you are buying one of those travel packages. Obviously varies a lot depending on what you want to do. Traveling to multiple host cities will add some, but I read that Brazil has a pretty good train pass that is relatively affordable. Read something on Twitter from someone who goes to Brazil every summer and pays around $2000 for flights. Just checked flights for next summer and you can find flights at $1200 roundtrip from Nola to Rio.

You're number is essentially $500 a day assuming flights are in the $2000 range. I've done a shitload of traveling and unless we do things completely different, you should be able to get by on significantly less than that.

Flights for June of '13 out of ATL to Rio are around $1000-1200 or so.

I dont guess you should assume it should be the same the following summer.

I see pricing figures, but I'm not exactly hip to the pricing game (i.e. trends).

My semi-educated prediction? American carriers (not just my own) will add capacity (bigger planes, extra frequency). If the Brazilian infrastructure is good, they shouldn't have to add destinations. My employer has a good partnership with a Brazilian airline for feeder flights anywhere in the country, and we only have to serve three major destinations on our planes.

Beast is right, though. $2000 isn't a crazy thought for a standard coach ticket next summer.

We'll know before long. I guarantee you the pricing nerds are already running more projections that you'd imagine. Flights won't actually go on sale (at least for my carrier) until about July 2013.

Also remember this: The World Cup just isn't in one city. The Olympics are. Olympic fares would easily double, maybe triple. World Cup will be a bit more spread out. So expect an increase, but it may not be life-changing.

The big three destinations are Sao Paulo (GRU), Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and to a lesser extent Brasilia (BSB).
