Is Germany going 3 at the back? What an interesting tactical move.

Yep, very interesting. I almost feel that this is a way to dodge Conte's tactical preparations by surprising Italy with a formation change. Conte's tactics have been immensely on point thus far in this tourney. Can't wait to see how it all plays out

Almost looks like it could be a 3-4-1-2

I'm worried this might end up being the most boring game of the tournament. It just has that super KO round, anti-football vibe to me.

Agreed. Feels like Germany might try to stay conservative

it's like a 5-3-2 and 3-4-1-2 hybrid

what happens with kroos/khedira will change things

It could be that. The 3 at the back, if Germany employ it, could allow them to attack with freedom, since they will always have a spare man at the back.

They could do a lot of things tactically with that group of players, but I just can't see Özil on the left in more of a 4-4-2. That just doesn't really make sense with that personnel to me

Pretty much. He's terrible at tracking back and honestly there is no reason for him to play anything other than a free role.

Yea. If they do stick with 4 at the back, Mueller could play on the left in a 4-2-3-1, but that's not where he usually plays either. Either way, I'm sure it will be pretty dynamic and change a little throughout the game

Any reason they went back to Götze when Draxler played so well?

I feel like both teams are tactically conservative with a defense-minded mentality. However, Germany prioritizes possession while Italy do not. One team will have to make the most of few chances. The technical abilities on stage and the employment of tactics will be fun to watch.

I think losing De Rossi and Motta in addition to Verratti and Marchisio already being out is finally going to be too much for Italy overcome.
