FC Cincinnati Owner Divulges Info Regarding MLS Expansion

Many of you may know that FC Cincinnati is a new club playing its inaugural season in USL. Thus far, the club has drawn 20k and 15k fans in two home matches at Nippert Stadium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. The owner, Carl Lindner, divulged some info regarding future MLS expansion from meetings between himself and Garber. The magic number of 28 clubs is the target for MLS, after which they will cease expansion for quite some time at least. According to Lindner, the order of preference for future MLS clubs is as follows:
1) St. Louis
2) Sacramento
3) Detroit
4) San Diego
5) San Antonio
6) Austin
7) Cincinnati
(Obviously three of these will not make it)
Whether that order of preference will actually be followed depends on three broad factors: a diverse, deep, and well financed ownership group; a stadium plan; and demonstrated support from the fans and business community. It will be interesting to observe the race for those final four spots and discover what clubs make it in and which ones are left out. Some snippets from Lindner:

quote:
After two weeks of record home game attendance, FC Cincinnati majority owner Carl Lindner III called Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber this week to talk about joining the league. According to media reports, Garber didn’t exactly shoot him down.
quote:
Garber told Lindner that Cincinnati will have to wait because MLS has been working on its development for years and two weekends don’t necessarily prove there’s a sustainable fan base.
quote:
Garber said the next round of MLS expansion could be as soon as 2020, and the current frontrunners for joining the league then are St. Louis and Sacramento. After that, candidates for expansion, in order of priority, are Detroit, San Diego, San Antonio, Austin and Cincinnati.
quote:
Current owners have voted to expand the league to 28 teams, and Garber said new teams will likely be added two at a time.
quote:
FC Cincinnati already has more than 5,000 season ticket holders and at least 29 corporate partners including Procter & Gamble Co.
quote:
"We have been thrilled with the enthusiastic support and record crowds from soccer and civic fans of Cincinnati at our first two games, and we will continue to work hard to build and maintain that success," the team said in a statement on Friday. "Our focus at FC Cincinnati is to be the strongest USL franchise we can be. A key to introducing pro soccer locally is having a top-level league which can deliver quality soccer and we are fortunate with our membership in the USL. The USL is an aspirational league, and like Orlando City's successful promotion and Sacramento's strong campaign, we certainly have MLS interest for Cincinnati."

damn this just makes me want a promotion and relegation system even more. Let teams like this with a large fan base and a determined management get the chance to make it in off of skill instead of meeting certain finical and political benchmarks

not going to happen when you pay a 100+ franchise fee
28 teams is pushing it already. If you want that many teams only an MLS I/II structure would work with pro/rel. Keeping everyone in the same set up but with how fickle American sports fans are support in MLS II could be dismal.
Owners in a franchise system will want to be guaranteed the top revenue stream of the league.

MLS would be retarded to put a team in Detroit

Detroit minor league club gets pretty good support and would also have an instant rivalry with Minnesota. You just can't have clubs like that out there on their own with no geographic rival.

America's d2 and d3 attendance is already very high for those levels compared to other countries, and that's without the possibility of promotion

As long as these interests are prioritized, the US will never reach its potential either at the club or international levels.

Based on what? The team there gets great support and it's the largest media market in the country without an MLS team.

not across the board its not
also you are ignoring the fact that's lots of these 2nd and 3rd division sides in lets say England are in a city/area with multiple teams to compete with. While these 2nd and 3rd division clubs in the states are the only one in that city with no competition.

It is what it is, the league should stay where its at after Miami, Atlanta and Minnesota get their clubs and just worry about growing the popularity of the MLS and making the talent pool deeper. Rushing into markets can help make the league popular in those cities, but it makes the already lacking talent pool even worse.
Most first divisions have no more than 20 clubs, and people will counter argue those countries don't have the population we do. But we don't have the depth in talent to increase the league while keeping the standard up.
I'd rather see the MLS with 20 teams, build the cap up and increase the talent pool, then look at expanding. The best way to increase the popularity of the MLS is to increase the product on the field. Not just jump into new markets making the talent pool thinner. You have the commissioner talking about being a top 5 league by 2022 but making moves counter productive to it.

Please provide an alternative. Guys paying 100 mil for an expansion team won't be too keen on seeing that investment drop to the second division. The league is only 20 years old. Many other leagues around the world have existed five times as long. "Never" is a long time, and I think it's foolish to throw that kind of verbiage out there, as many people often do regarding the state of soccer in this country.

Not sure why that's relevant to your argument. Support is support. If anything that's counter productive to your argument

Love the colors

huh
it shows that his point ignores factor that these Europeans sides have more competition in terms of getting fans.
If 2nd division team is the only one in their city like Leeds who average 22k fans a match this season. How many 2nd division American clubs do that? Hell lots of MLS teams don't and they are in bigger markets.

Well, right now Cincinnati
Sacramento gets good support, as does Indy.

Anericans investing in Swansea and Palace don't seem too concerned.
Pro/Rel is necessary because it rewards organizations that are run well and develop talent, and punishes those who don't. What you end up with is the cream rising to the top rather than a half dozen sleep walking owners who are rewarded for failure. It stagnates our league and it stagnates our national team.
