I'm just starting to really get into soccer, so if this is a dumb question please be gentle.

I was just wondering what makes the European leagues so much stronger than the South American domestic leagues? Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Columbia, etc are all top international teams but their players all play in the big European leagues. Even some of the lesser players are playing in MLS instead of in the various South American leagues. Is it simply a money issue and the South American clubs cannot afford the salaries or are the leagues just not as important as the national teams in those countries?

A few years ago, the Brazilian league was keeping guys for far longer and even bringing successful players back but that's really died down with the recession.

It's 100 percent about the money as you are now seeing legit Brazilians go to China.

Money, champions league, better and tougher leagues so you'll get noticed more by the national team coach (looking at klinsmann) if they also prefer European leagues over the domestics.

Like the other guys said, money. Also, exposure is huge. You see many, many more games on TV from the major European leagues than from the Brazilian or Argentinian leagues (the only 2 leagues in South America that are worth a shite).
