This kid deserves a thread. His rise has been meteoric, and he stepped in mightily for the guy who has been our best player this Cup, and accomplished the task set before him. He's a fricking beast.

Future is bright.

His ceiling is probably lower than we are hoping right now because he has spent his formative years in America, but in addition to speed, he has one thing you can't teach: he's cool under pressure

As he gains experience his crosses are going to become so much better too. That and defense are definitely his main areas that need improvement. That being said, he has so much skill that is so hard to be taught and the future is definitely incredibly bright for him.

I really hope you are wrong! Either way, I predict he will be in Europe within a couple years.

I enjoyed watching him. He still has a lot to learn. He kind of left the defense out to dry a few times on his runs, but I like his speed and he was getting the ball to space. I'd like to see him do more in the future.

The best coaching from Klinsmann this entire World Cup came on how they figured out how to generally hide his lack of defense for 90 minutes today, with a combination of Cameron, Zusi, and whoever else was available.

Yedlin was fantastic in his defined role this Cup, and it's one reason why I started the thread earlier today about moving him to midfield.

In all do respect why? Because he can run?

Maybe Im just still bitter but he hasnt been able to defend runners at Sounders mathces.

Lets just cool the jets.

That's why I hated his selection. He isn't even a good defender by MLS standards.

But Klinsmann wasn't playing him at right back (not really, at least), and he was utilized perfectly for his skill set.

That's why I'm saying he should just move up to midfield instead.

I guess we watched different games today, because I saw him backtrack like no one I've seen in a US shirt in recent memory, and make 2 or 3 big tackles to win back the ball. I didn't see him make any big mistakes today. I'll have to re-watch to verify that, but I'm pretty sure he was one of our best players today.

I don't think he should move to right mid. I think right back is the position he needs to learn. I think he can carve out a nice career with his athleticism and tenacity. He needs to be positionally more aware but that comes with experience.

Agreed. With his athleticism and motor, he could have a nice long career there.

Look at a lot of fullbacks across the pond - Glen Johnson, Ashley Cole, Jordi Alba to name a few. All of them really started out as attackers or more refined with their skill pushing up the pitch. Defensive positioning can be taught and refined, but you can't teach pure athleticism, and having someone that helps add to the attack is such a great asset to have in a fullback, see Fab Johnson.

He's got some promise.

I was kind of intrigued by that move he would make in the attacking third where he would have the ball on the outside and face up to a defender and then just kind of stay there for awhile. For those who watch a lot of soccer: Is this a common move? Is it reminiscent of anyone on one of the big teams?

Yeah he was just looking for someone to make a run or to see where the best option to pass was. A couple of times he should have just run at their defense but all in all, I think he made the right decision most of the time.

He was one of our best players today not named Howard. I thought he played very well. His run down and sweet arse tackle on Hazard in the 2nd half was money.

I fully agree that he was one of our top,4 guys today. And he didn't have many lapses on defense. But I think that is because we had Cameron covering a lot of his space, which allowed him to go up a lot.

It was actually really well designed.

That was the plan all along, which I noticed when they announced the lineups. It was a pretty good thought. I would have liked to see Fabian get 120 minutes to run at that defense.

Yeah, no way he could ever develop into a good player by staying in the United States.

Btw, I don't disagree, I think he will move to Europe eventually.
