I know in USA professional sports that when teams and players come to an agreement contractually, the contract MUST be approved by the professional league in which they participate to ensure it doesn't violate league rules or any league/player labor agreements.

Did La Liga have no overall approval authority over the contract that Neymar signed with Barcelona?

If they did, then did they not approve the 222M buy-out clause with that approval?

And, if they did, how can they disapprove it now? It would seem to me to retro-actively DISapprove a previously signed-and-approved contract matter would not be a wise move with regard to league/player relations

My best guess is that this is mainly just posturing for (shite) show without much of a legal case.

That said, I think their argument would be against the validity of the funds in light of FFP being used to buy it out and not any issue with the contract itself.

They don't care about the buyout clause. All players in Spain are legally required to have a buyout clause. It just doesn't come up that frequently, because the only high profile team that will actually force buyers to trigger them with any regularity is Athletic. They care about where the money is coming from.

Of course, I doubt they actually have the authority to block the transfer, but it's La Liga, so they're just going to do whatever the frick they want to do until forced to do otherwise.

A spokesman for the office of La Liga president, Javier Tebas, had warned on Wednesday: "We will not accept the money for the liberation clause, the reason is that we have doubts that this money is in accordance with UEFA Financial Fair Play rules."

The LFP (Ligue de Football Professional) has since expressed their surprise at La Liga's refusal to accept the payment of the release clause.

Lol, the league that is home to the Galacticos and Barcelona is going to start crying about transfer fees.

Dandy can you shed some light on why is Spain such a terrible place full of first rate b*****?

PSG flew to Barcelon and paid the buyout to the club directly. Neymar has been released

Neymar outplayed Messi most of the year. He will definitely put up a better year next year.

Its safe to put Neymar ahead of Messi.
