So I am jumping back on the soccer saddle, a buddy convinced me to play on his newly created over 30 coed team. After being convinced that the league is as close as possible to a beer league, I bought in as I am in the worst shape of my life. The team is going to be terrible, as we have a mixture of out of practice/shape former players and in shape never played befores. Our first game is tomorrow and I will probably be in charge of formations. Coming to the board for some guidance.

Woman goals count for 2, guys can only score twice per guy. So I was thinking 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 to give more width up top. I think if you have more people on the flanks with someone who can distribute the ball to the outside from the middle, we have a chance of pushing the ball up the field. My concern would be the middle of the field getting over run as I was going to put some of the more tactical people in the middle but those will probably be the out of shape guys. Thoughts, especially from people who have played at this level before?

Edit: the more I think about it, crowding the middle seems like the way to go. So maybe playing a 3-2-4-1 is an option.

im not 30, but I would assume all tactic kinda flies out the window when your entire team is out of shape. Leave a chick up top and keep the other team stretched.

Whoever is in the middle needs to be the most tactically proficient, in shape person you have. Preferably make this person a defensive minded midfielder.

People with shitty touch but good athleticism/stamina should go out wide.

Have at least one decent girl up top.

But yeah, you might be best suited to crowding the midfield, but be careful because if you do that with some tactically naive peeps you might see a lot of people crowding around one opposing player and all it takes is one pass for 2-3 people to be completely out of the play.

I fully expect this to be one of the worst performing teams I have ever been a part of, but winning isn't why I am playing so hopefully it is just a lot of fun.

We have a few guys who should be able to hold down the middle and get back on defense, so we shall see.

So basically you and Sheep are opposites. Or at least that's what I get from his posts.

We had (moderate) success with two girls up top, provided both can run and stretch the d some.

We also took are best girl and put her at CM with our best guy. Since most teams play a 4-4-2 with girls on the outside, we always had a guy playing outside mid running against a girl midfielder and defender. If you don't have a girl that's mildly technically proficient that plan goes out the window.

11 v 11 in a coed league? That sounds miserable.

Just a friendly FYI......this spring I did basically the same thing - joined a friends Sunday League team while in the worst shape of my life, and I ended up jacking my groin up to the point that I missed 75% of the season. Ease back into playing. I royally screwed myself by going out there and trying to play like I was still 18 / in way better shape than I am actually am.

Yea, as a team we are concerned about injuries so much that I think we are going to implement a heavy rotation substitution strategy especially with the guys a the beginning of the season.

I play in a 6v6 coed league. If it weren't for a substitution rotation, I'd be dead.

I don't believe in practice. I'm a different type of player in the game, I swear.

Bump for update

So our first game happened last night. The other team was short handed and we had a full squad (20 or so people) so us winning 4-3 (girl goals counting as two is the cause of their 3) isn't really valuable. I completely over thought using more strategy than just throwing people out there. The influence of people who had never played before completely took over strategy. Went with a simple 4-4-2.

I volunteered to play in goal for the first half, and felt that was where I could contribute the most especially with the field conditions (Independence park is terrible, still )so I stayed in goal the entire game.

For 6v6 indoor we usually do a 2-2-1, but the field is so small that it gets pretty chaotic and there is no real formation.
