Chelsea are about 3 or 4 quality signings away from being able to pull it off.
This.
I'm honestly struggling to even piece together a decent 3-5-2 look with what we're working with now.
I would imagine Willian would be in the center attacking position of a five-man midfield, but I don't know how we fill in a true LWB (Dave?) and also accommodate Hazard on that side.
Then you try to squeeze Matic, Fab and potentially Oscar or Pedro in there somewhere, with Cuadrado as the RWB?
Zouma-JT-Cahill/Ivan in the back isn't horrendous but I certainly don't love it. Not enough speed to cover ground back there.
It's a mess for the time being. I'm going to stop hurting my brain trying to think of how we can make it work and just wait until we finish signing guys

Costa Bat
Dave Fab Hazard Matic Willian
JT Zouma Ivon
That's the best I've got with our current team. Zouma can play sweeper as the central CB of the three. I worry about the speed of the other two to cover space and mark forwards.
Hazard in the center in a more advanced role feels like the only real option for him... I expect he will still roam as he is known to do for Chelsea and Belgium.

I need to read up on 3-5-2 tactics because I struggle with the role of each player.
Same. From what I have read, it's a very flexible formation.
The two WBs can play mainly defensively, almost like a 5-3-2, and then support on the attack.
You can play it with one or two holding mids, like a 3-1-4-2 or a 3-2-3-2.
Or you can do some combination of all of the above.
To me, the fewer defensive assignments you give to Fab and Hazard the better. Matic obviously can be a plug, and Willian and Pedro both track back well and contribute defensively. I liked Fab in the holding mid role because it allowed him to gain possession and see the field early, but god damn, he is a liability on defense.
I also wonder how Hazard would do paired up top with Costa. Im skeptical but it could be a possibility, maybe if they were a big staggered as opposed to double strikers?
Could we put Dave as one of the outside CB pairings? I like his athleticism but I worry about his aerial coverage. Zouma needs to be healthy because we rely on his athleticism.
I like Fab and Matic in deeper roles. I wonder if we could play both Pedro and Willian in WBs. Their work rates give me hope here.
If we get Costa, Hazard, Bat, Willian, Pedro, and Fab all on the field at the same time then we better score some goals

Well the fact is JT won't be able to play 90 minutes week-in and week-out. So I'm assuming there will be some sort of rotations with him, Zouma, Cahill, Ivan and Dave. Dave just fits more as a WB in my eyes because of his agility/pace.
As good as their work rates are, Pedro and Willian seem very offensive-minded to both be WBs, but like we said earlier, I've never really truly studied a 3-5-2. Maybe that's what works.
If they were both WBs I could feel more comfortable having Matic or even Mikel on the pitch to add some defensive help. If everyone in front of our back three are looking for the goal, I'm worried we'll get caught up pressing and let some goals in on the back end

I think if you sign Nainggolan and Batshuayi, it could be very interesting. These are the three lineups I would roll with if those are the only two guys we end up landing. At least to try it out and see how it works.
ETA: Fabregas, Nainggolan, Hazard midfield sounds like suicide in the premier league, but I'd like to at least run with it for a friendly (if we sign Nainggolan, of course).
I think Matic is going to have a big year under Conte. He seems like the type of player who would excel for Conte. If he's playing at a high level and we got Nainggolan in

These look pretty strong, I'm just not sure about Hazard playing centrally. He's always been out on the left. I guess he would just be a floater and do whatever the frick he wants like always.
I like Kenedy as a LWB. And Nainggolan would be a pimp signing if it goes through. Also Bonucci could help solidify that back three if he comes in.
We have a lot of talent in the midfield to play with: Hazard, Willian, Fab, Oscar, Matic, Nainggolin (maybe), Pedro, Kenedy, RLC, hell even Mikel is great at what he does.
Finding the best combo of the above will be a challenge. But it's a good problem to have.

Those lineups are pretty close to what i see, especially having kenedy out left and Dave a CB.
Bu radja aint coming. I could see oscar and cesc as AMs with Matic/new signing holding while Hazard floats behind the ST, which pretty fluidly switches to a 433 if need be, push dave over to RB and willian up the field.

If we want him, we'll get him. I think both parties are just holding out because they know Chelsea will offer more

Yeah, but he's been pretty poor since the goal IMO

So, is the Goalkeeper's job Courtois' or is there a chance that Begovic has a shot? I like his potential and measurables, but just have never reached a level of comfort with Courtois. Just never seems to make the spectacular/impossible save --- at least when I'm watching.

Begovic is not even close to a motivated inform Courtois. Begovic is the guy that will make the saves he should make. Courtois is the guy that's going to make the spectacular/impossible saves.

Gotcha. Just not Wales' 3rd goal today.

Michy posted a goodbye letter online today. Said the deal will probably be announced tomorrow. It's a good start, but we still need a few more signings. Time for Conte to get to work!

The fact that Conte subbed on Zaza to take a penalty today really has me worried. That was one of the worst things I've ever seen.

I can keep posting these, if you'd like. I acknowledge he wasn't at his best last season. But If he's playing at 100%, though, he's one of the 3 or 4 best in the world. He's only 24, as well. De Gea has more than a year on him. Cech has 10. Lloris has 5. Neuer has six years on him. Oblak is probably the only guy at his level or better who is younger. Courtois is going to continue to develop for like 5 more years. If he doesn't want to be at Chelsea, fine, sell him on. But if he wants to be in goal for us, we'd be CRAZY to let him leave. He missed 3.5 months due to injury last season and then came back into a team that was in a relegation battle. Sort of hard to play at an insane level under those circumstances.

Conte has been hailed for tactical masterclasses all tournament. If Zaza buries that penalty, Conte looks like a genius. Do I need to mention all the world class players who missed penalties today?

That last part was tongue in cheek, but man that penalty was awful.
I wonder if he practiced that running man routine or just decided to bust it out then. If I'm the manager and I see that in training there is no way that guy takes a pen for me, ever.

Hopefully Michy is the first of several signings. Leicester just signed a guy who could be Kante's replacement. If we signed Kante, man, I'd be so happy.
