Champions League group stage draw (result in OP) | 11 a.m. CDT | FS1
Posted by BraveTiger225 on 8/25/16 at 5:24 am10
RESULT
Today is the draw for the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League group stage. Below is some information on the group stage and the draw just in case the newbies need a primer or you seasoned drunks need a refresher.
Group Stage Format and Draw Procedure
32 teams will be drawn into eight groups of four teams each as per the usual. There are 22 automatic qualifiers for the group stage and the 10 winners from the Playoff round.
The top two teams from each group progress to the Round of 16 and the third-placed team from each group moves to the Round of 32 of the Europa League. The fourth-placed team in each group is eliminated from European competition.
For the draw, the 32 teams are divided into four seeding pots.
Pot 1 contains the title holders (Real Madrid) and the champions of the seven top-ranked countries in the UEFA Country Coefficient ranking (Spain, England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, France, Russia).
Pots 2, 3 and 4 contain the remainder of the clubs in order of their UEFA Club Coefficients.
Teams will be drawn from the pots and placed into groups lettered A through H at random, but within all draw procedure guidelines. You might see a situation where a team is drawn and only one group is an option for that team.
Teams from the same country cannot be drawn against one another in the group stage. Automation will restrict groups as necessary when this situation arises. I presume clubs from Russia and Ukraine will be kept apart as well as they have in recent draws.
The pots for the draw are as follows:
Match Schedule
MD1: Sep 13/14
MD2: Sep 27/28
MD3: Oct 18/19
MD4: Nov 1/2
MD5: Nov 22/23
MD6: Dec 6/7

Haha dang! I made my group stage thread one minute before you
Definitely gonna roll with yours. City have had a good track record with your threads.

Dream group is CSKA, Brugge and Kobenhavn
I'm sure City will get Barca, Lyon/Monchengladbach and Monaco.

I despise the way they do Pot 1 these days. Not sure where they come up with this crap.
Aside from Monaco, Pot 4 is about as weak as I've ever seen it. Rostov did look impressive against Ajax, but that is also the shittiest Ajax team I've seen in ages. The way they herp derped the Eredivisie title at the death was spectacular.
Conversely, Pots 1 and 2 are as stacked as I can remember. No matter what each group should have some juicy showdowns between teams that are expected to make the knockout rounds.

Looking forward to watching us bottle the first game of the round of sixteen only to have a resilient return leg that gets us close to advancing but just not quite.

Am I the only one who likes the new Pot one rule? I think if you win your league you should be able to possibly gain an easier draw.

Patiently waiting for a draw of Juventus, Arsenal, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Monaco. If Arsenal somehow make it to the round of 16, can't wait for them to draw Barcelona or Bayern.

Celtic seems unlikely to advance out of most draws, so I just hope we get some great matchups and have some fun with it. Not saying we couldn't advance, but unlikely.
Good to see Spurs in there.

First time I remember not really worrying about City avoiding anyone in Pot 3 or 4. Spurs are probably the best and can't be drawn with another English club.
I'm sure they'll get Bayern or Barca out of 1, though.

Lyon and Sporting could cause problems out of Pot 3. The Portuguese teams are always amazingly tough in this competition.
