Brazil official says women's soccer is better now because players wear makeup

The coordinator for women's soccer for the Confederation of Brazilian Football told The Globe and Mail that the women's game has improved because players are “getting more beautiful” and “putting on makeup.”

The Brazil women's national team, captained by five-time FIFA World Player of the Year Marta, is currently playing in the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada. The squad made the quarterfinals in the 2011 Women's World Cup and has won the last two Copa América Femenina competitions.

Marco Aurelio Cunha addressed the lack of fan interest in women's soccer in Brazil as compared to men's soccer by suggesting it may become more popular in the country thanks to more of a focus on the “femininity” of the players.

“Women’s football used to copy men’s football,” said Cunha. “Even the jersey model, it was more masculine. We used to dress the girls as boys. So the team lacked a spirit of elegance, femininity. Now the shorts are a bit shorter, the hair styles are more done up. It’s not a woman dressed as a man.”

And this guy is in charge! (The sad part is that there are probably some posters here who agree with him.)

Would be better if they dressed like beach volleyball players from Brazil

I think he shouldn't have said it. But to be honest, the men's game is full of players that reach celebrity status and are very conscientious of their looks. People like to watch attractive people. Women don't need to be offended by the truth that applies to both sides.

I think they should dress more like a lady.

I don't see anything wrong with what he said.

To me, it's a problem for the guy in charge of a country's women's national team to say the game is better not because the play is better but because the women look prettier to him. Nothing wrong with players being prettier, but that shouldn't be your mindset as someone in charge of a national team.

And, like cwil pointed out, noted piece of human garbage Sepp Blatter has said similar remarks in the past.

This is a system of leadership that says the women's game is better because the players are wearing shorter shorts, but it won't actually help improve the game by, I don't know, playing a World Cup on actual grass.

Meh. Women's soccer is still borderline unwatchable.

I was asking myself the other day how young of a boys team could win the Women's World Cup? The best American boys out there.

Our U-20 team would absolutely dominate and they had some 17 year olds.

Well of course. I'm thinking like Barcelona's U-12's could bury the women.

No doubt in my mind the U.S. u17 would waltz through the tournament without a hiccup

I watched the first game against Australia and had to turn it off. There's no athletic finesse to the women's game. It looks hard to them.

I'd rather watch the Lingerie Football League than women's soccer any day of the week.

That doesn't mean I don't hope we win the thing though, I just won't watch.

I don't know about Americans but I bet the best 12 and 13 year olds from Barcelona or Bayern's youth academy would run the U.S. Women's team out of the stadium.

My friends travel team beat canadas national team. They were u-14 and had multiple us youth players.

Also it was 6-1 so it wasn't even close.

Men dress up as well. Go watch some bundesliga and check out all the hair gel.

Good to know. With this knowledge, I'm taking Barça U-10s.
