gibbo out, arteta back. squad will be unchanged otherwise. XI should be different though.

You think Giroud is in the 11?

AW seemed to indicate he would. said he sat Wednesday to be rested.

I think there's a chance özil gets rested. part of me knows he needs it. the other part of me doesn't want the özil haters to get any satisfaction.

I don't want to think about that.

To join a late convo, I'd take Song as a utility player. His final ball is dank although he's a moron in terms of positioning, only because he wants to be Yaya Toure. If he was disciplined he could be amazing. He'd be a great player for squad depth as he can cover CM, DM, and CB. Sign him up for free.

if it were for a free, i might consider it just because it's low risk. but his preferred position is one that Rambo and maybe Jack and Ox are better in already. he was pretty good to very good in that role, but i don't think he's good enough to displace any of those three. i'd rather not have him in that logjam.

i don't think he's acceptable DM or CB cover, honestly. i wouldn't feel particularly comfortable with him in either of those roles. we keep saying if he was disciplined as if we haven't been saying that about him for years. at some point you begin to wonder if it's possible.

for free, with little risk, sounds like a good deal to me. if we have to pay even half of what we sold him for, i think the money would be better spent elsewhere.

I mean, there were games where he was disciplined. In 09/10 he rarely went forward when we played a single pivot. When we moved to the double pivot he roamed forward, but the problem was he didn't have the stamina to roam back.

I don't think he would come back honestly. And Wenger wouldn't ask him to be disciplined. Flamini and Arteta are discplined, but for different reasons. Flamini loves tackling and running around, and Arteta's injuries have turned the once magnificent winger into a stable DLP who does his damnedest to stay in position for fear of being caught out due to his pace.

At CB Song's ability to pass out of the back would be important, especially as we play a high line anyway. I mean, I don't think he'll come unless he's on a free.

Speaking of which, Mertesacker's passing ability have improved tremendously since he arrived here. God I remember when he first came his first pass was five yards to either the fullback or the deepest midfielder. Occasionally now we see him make a 1st station pass through the 1st line of defense, which is always surprising to see since they usually seem to work. Probably having the Germans there helps with that.

i'm not sure arteta was ever a winger (at least not since his pre-everton days) but maybe i'm misremembering. still your point is valid.

i just think we all have far too fond memories, largely due to a couple of magnificent lofted balls and magical volleys, of a player who was pretty much just a solid player. 2011/12 seems like a pretty big outlier in his career. he's been average to bad at both DM and CB when he's gotten onto the pitch for Barca. he doesn't have the pace to play a high line and his positioning at CB is suspect. i'd only want him playing CB for us if everyone was injured.

the quickness with which we decided to sell him for a non-godfather offer when we still had him on a very reasonable deal is pretty strong circumstantial evidence to me of AW's opinion of his value.

unless barca let him leave for free (maybe they do), it just doesn't make sense. and ManU or somebody would overpay for him anyways. even then, i'd rather us spend our money on fees/salaries for much better or more promising DMs/CBs.

He made his name as a wide midfielder but played all over. From the man himself:

quote:

"Sometimes when I watch old videos from when I was at Everton, I see I was playing left wing, right wing and the way I have to play now is very different,"

Everton fans claimed he was too weak to play in the center.

In 06 he was awesome. Should have gotten a call-up then. He's slowly transitioned to a central player but he isn't a natural CM like Flamini or Ramsey. He's like Song, except he chooses to remain deep rather than go upfield and then get caught out.

Well we thought 2011/12 was when he turned the corner. If he stayed here he would have been the lynchpin of the team. He wasn't great in 2010/11 at DM, but in 09/10 and the latter half of 08/09 he was really good. He certainly outshined Diaby and Denilson.

Well 15m was a great price for him, especially as we bought him for peanuts. He developed and looked like a diamond in a certain system. Barca didn't look closely enough at him, obviously.

I can see an Italian team overpaying for him.

Basically I want him for a free and nothing else. I'd rather go younger, more mobile, and more disciplined. We haven't really missed Song's hollywood balls, which only worked because he was connecting with RvP.

Sorry if this has already been covered, but it appears the Swansea games in 3 weeks is postponed? Anyone know why?

FA Cup Quarterfinal vs. Everton is on the same day as that Swansea match. A rescheduled date has not been determined, as far as I know.

Ah, Ok. That makes sense. I suppose the schedule I was looking at hadn't place that new fixture in there yet.

Thanks.
