re: Arsenal 2012/2013 Season Long Thread

I've seen enough of the Santi-Giroud-Theo-Jack attacking group. Time to try something else.

Also, we should probably start our best CB. The shitty part of TV5 being named captain is that Wenger feels obligated to play him.

Jenkinson sub was really odd. He was playing well in the second half, though Ramsey did solidly at RB he didn't offer the width and pace. Ramsey was playing well in MF, I thought. He and Arteta were playing well. Jack was poor. As were Santi, Giroud, and Theo, even though it seemed like Theo made some really good runs that weren't picked out.

Jenkinson was playing well, so his sub made no sense. Ramsey should have been taken out instead. Taking out Jenkinson really put a crutch in our subs after that.

Poldi looked poor.

Giroud looked poor.

Ramsey looked really poor. (sorry OBU, I disagree with your sentiment here)

The defense had serious lapses that really cost us, especially Verm.

Per was solid, as was Arteta. Jack played decent for 70 minutes and then looked gassed.

Our attack is impotent. Our crosses from the side yield nothing because Giroud or Walcott (lol) is going 1v2 or 1v3 against the defense trying to win headers or low driving crosses in the box.

No one shoots. We seem unable to play through the middle. Our go-to attacking play seems to be scramble around in the middle until it gets clogged, then pass it out wide and hope for something to come from a cross. Clearly it's not working.

I would love to see what a combination of Giroud and Walcott up top could do for us. I think a switch to a 4-4-2 is in order, because we simply aren't getting it done otherwise.

I used to have faith in Wenger but now I just doubt his tactical acumen.

We must've been watching entirely different matches if you thought Ramsey was really poor and Jack was decent.

Per was Per. Fairly solid then statue-esque at important points. Kos should've started. Both Per and TV5 need to move on in the summer.

The way the game is played these days, we'd get overrun in the midfield playing a 442.

Jack didn't have a good game either though.

A little baffled at our choices in the front.. Cazorla on the left? Still pissed off at Lennon's goal not being a foul right before that.

Disagree here, Kos might be AS good as the other two but in no way is he better than.

So... like Stan who owns the Rapids and the Rams?

No. I don't know Stan's history, but he runs Arsenal responsibly.

Hicks took over LFC two years after a CL victory, and in the 3 or 4 years in which he owned the club, nothing was won, hundreds of millions in debt were piled on, a stadium was not built, the club almost went into administration and he ended up leaving LFC in the relegation zone. On top of that, our spending was barely positive, he had public arguments with Rafa, his son had to be removed from the board after sending a letter to a fan saying "blow me frick face and die" or something along those lines, and we brought in players like Milan Jovanovic and fricking Paul Konchesky. Paul fricking Konchesky.

Rafa details a lot in his new book. He was told he had x amount for transfers, but then was given nothing once negotiations began. He says over and over how Jovetic was to be brought in as cover for Torres, and the owners agreed to buy him, and then just ignored all contact when the time came.

So, no, I wouldn't say the two situations are all that similar.

I agree. And despite comments earlier made in my depression after the Bayern loss, missing the CL won't be the death blow it was to 'Pool. If Arsenal is a bell curve, this season should be the bottoming out point. No reason for us not to be improved next season, even without spending big. Losing CL money hurts our chances of being closer to ManU, but we'd still be in the CL hunt next year.

Also, I don't understand the criticism of Ramsey today. Pressed well. Passed well. He and Arteta really shut down Bale and their midfield going forward. Created our only goal by winning a free kick with a really nice bit of skill 1v3. Had our best chance blocked by a very good BAE recovery. Thought he, Jenkinson, and Arteta were our brightest spots today.

Every.Single.Attack where he got the ball in a somewhat dangerous position ended with him passing back to Arteta or a CB or losing possession rather than even attempting a nice pass in, I saw several times where Theo was making a decent run and could have had a chance with a well timed pass...

I think it's a confidence issue frankly. He doesn't want to be responsible for giving the ball away so he recycles possession or tries to dribble around until a wide open teammate appears.

Well, I read that and I agree that those two things are different... but I was just commenting on those exact words you said about our owner running a bunch of mediocre franchises... that's it.

Hard to say how Arsenal would recover, but it really didn't hurt LFC that much. What hurt Liverpool was the period after we didn't qualify, when we needed to reinforce the squad, and, instead, fired our manager, hired Hodgson, bought Konchesky and fricking Poulson, almost went into administration, fell to the relegation zone, fired Hodgson, hired Kenny and bought Carroll.

Losing Xabi, Arbeloa, Masch, Torres, Benayoun and Hyypia hurt, but I think we could have survived it had Rafa been given backing to rebuild the squad. Instead, we fired him, which is one of the worst things to do in that situation.

Like I said, I don't know Stan's history, but what I said was that Hicks has driven multiple franchises into the ground. Two franchises he owned filed for bankruptcy (Stars and Rangers), at Liverpool he somehow piled on £300m debt onto the club, despite buying nobody, and not building a stadium, by missing loan payments and getting hit with interest charges, and was run out of town in Brazil when he decided he was going to change the Corinthians' culture by changing their colors and getting rid of their best players. He is a top 3 worst owner on the planet, and just does not compare with Stan in anyway that I can see.

Yeah, I guess what I meant to say was, Liverpool missing the CL was indicative of other things. It was a symptom not the cause of your recent downturn. It didn't spiral you out of control (even if you would've liked the extra money). Us missing the CL would merely be a symptom of our less serious illness, which really, we can only speculate about at this point but *seems* to be nearing the end.

That simply isn't true. He may have done it a few times, (if Opta/FourFourTwo would ever release the stat zone app on Android, I could tell you how much it happened) but it certainly wasn't every single attack. And it's not his job anyways, as part of the double pivot, to be our creative force. I will agree that he, Santi, and Jack all had moments where they could've played Theo in it looked like, but they never even tried (except for that one Santi ball to Theo he couldn't control with his backheel).

Let's put it this way, the tottenham fans I watched with were shouting for us to pass the ball to Ramsey on every attack because they knew that's where the attack would end.

yes, I used hyperbole you're right it wasn't every last time.

re: Arsenal 2012/2013 Season Long Thread
sorry, I used my eyes to determine what he was doing for us out there. (not much)

Am I saying he lost the game? no not at all. but he also wasn't good. his usual contribution on defense was to foul lennon or whomever was running by him with the ball. His contribution on offense was nil aside from being fouled after holding on the ball for far too long and winning that free kick.
