quote:

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann said he is happy to know that the fans at the sold-out Rose Bowl for Saturday's U.S.-Mexico CONCACAF Cup match will be overwhelmingly pro-Mexico because it gives the U.S. a chance to "win them over."

The game is the sole chance for either country to qualify for the 2017 Confederations Cup, which Klinsmann has said represents an important opportunity to prepare for Russia 2018.

"They [the U.S.] are going to win over thousands of Mexican fans to their side, because of the 90,000 fans that go to the Rose Bowl, even if only maybe 60,000 wear the green jersey, a lot of them have another jersey underneath and that's the American jersey," Klinsmann said. "I bumped into a fan at the gas station and he said: 'I'm cheering for both teams,' and I said: 'Good for you, we are going to win you over.'"

I was at the Gold Cup final in 2005, and the place was loaded with fans that were cheering for Colombia or Mexico in the QFs and SFs that were putting on for the US against Panama.

I noticed the same thing in 2011. But when it came down to us and mex, they only wore the mex jersey.

I just don't see any way that it happens today.

These quotes just come off as incredibly naive. No harm in being optimistic though, I guess.

It's pretty smart on Jurgen's part IMO. With so many 1st and 2nd generation Mexicans living in the states now, we should embrace anyone who wants to be a fan of the US team.

If I decide to retire to Costa Rica, I would adopt their teams. I wouldn't live there, work there, pay taxes there, and then cheer for my native country. If they want to be true Americans in their hearts and minds, they need to adopt our sports teams.

I mean, just because I'm of Scottish descent, I don't consider myself Scottish.

I bet he won over a lot of Mexican fans tonight because he laid a fricking egg.

Yeah, I bet the Mexicans are pretty big fans of Klinsmann right now. First he helped them qualify for a WC, and now he helped them qualify for the confed cup. What a great guy.
