When I was in high school, I don't remember any of the MLS academies dominating the scene. The youth national team pool seemed to be made up of mostly local club or local academy teams. Looking at the youth national teams now, the roster is more than half MLS kids. I saw a couple MLS academies win the national title this year.

A local kid here who got a call up to the national team just went to the union. Are the academies now what kids strive to be apart of? Hope so, This is what MLS needs to become a legit league.

* Now that I look at the standings from this past year, 6 of the 7 division winners were MLS teams. So it looks like they are dominating.

If it's not there already, I think it's moving in that direction.

pvilleguru posted this in the US youth/abroad players thread:

GOALKEEPERS (2): Eric Lopez (LA Galaxy; Westminster, Calif; Brady Scott (De Anza Force; Petaluma, Calif.)
DEFENDERS (6): Jordi Avila (Kendall SC; Hialeah Gardens, Fla.), Calvin Aroh (New England Revolution; Glastonbury, Conn.), Daniel Jones (New England Revolution; West Hartford, Conn.), Aedan Stanley (St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri; Columbia, Ill.), Callum Stretch (Unattached; Encino, Calif.), Carson Vom Steeg (Real So Cal; Santa Barbara, Calif.)
MIDFIELDERS (6): Raul Aguilera, Jr. (Orlando City; Sanford, Fla.), Jose Carranza (DC United; Manassas, Va.), Jonathan Gonzalez (C.F. Monterrey; Santa Rosa, Calif), Gabriel Paniagua (Kendall SC; Miami, Fla.), Nick Taitague (Richmond United; Midlothian, Va.), Juan Torres (Georgia United; Lilburn, Ga.)
FORWARDS (6): Andrew Carleton (Georgia United; Powder Springs, Ga.), Lucas Del Rosario (CASL; Durham, N.C.), Griffin Dorsey (Colorado Rush; Evergreen, Col.), Wilson Harris (Real So Cal; Encino, Calif.), Justin Rennicks (New England Revolution; Boston, Mass.), Aristotle Zarris (RSL Arizona; Casa Grande, Az.)

This group is like 16 years old I think. You can see there is a healthy dose of MLS academy guys but there are still plenty who come from other academies.

I was looking at a few age groups and Georgia United is the club that stood out to me. Seemed like they had a shite ton of kids who were elite. AUFC academy finna be stacked.

Having coached in an MLS Academy the level is extremely high. US Soccer also sends out scouts once a month or so to observe both players, the coaches and the progression within the training sessions.

The MLS Academies are all fully funded, the non-MLS Academies are hit and miss. With that, plus the name brand, the MLS Academies somewhat dominate the USSDA scene. Also, obviously, the ability to hopefully climb the ladder from Academy to MLS is another plus.

What are the options like for kids in Louisiana? Doesn't Chicago Fire ( ) have some kind of set up down here?

You can move to Houston.

Chicago Fire is the sponsor for the big club in NOLA but its more just a money maker.

They pay the Fire for the naming rights to hopefully persuade kids to join the club. In return once or twice a year a member of the Fire makes an appearance.

Damn. I hope in the future we will have some better options than Houston.

LA Fire has 3 guys making @ or near 100k. All they care about is keeping numbers up to pay those top three guys as they treat the lower coaches like crap. They lose a bunch of top coaches for these reasons yearly. The whole club is nothing but politics. It's a total shite show.

They did simply buy out and change the logo from Lafreniere Soccer Association. At least when it was Lafreniere, you knew what it was all about and volunteered at your own risk.

If what you say is true, that sucks, as parents and kids are thinking they're in an academy club. And it lets them charge even more.

No one of any brain involved with LA Fire thinks its an academy club. However, its top players get invited to tryouts with the Chicago MLS Academy. You can bash on LA Fire all you want, with some justification, but there's nothing else local that will give them better training and opportunities. A few have been trying (Jesters, Spartans), with mixed success. If my son were truly a national prospect, I suppose we would have to move somewhere else. But that's the way in many sports, such as tennis.
