| O-T Lounge|| re: Need some help picking out an entry level DSLR for my wife's Christmas present - LSUtigerME on 12/8/13 at 6:37 pm|
Rebel T3i/T4i. You'd actually come in under budget on that one, could pick up an extra lens. It's a simple, easy camera and fits a lot of available lenses.
I'm no expert, but it's what I got my wife.
ETA: I also agree with foshizzle. There are some great point and shoot cameras available. If ...

2TB external I keep at the house. 1 TB external I keep offsite.

| O-T Lounge|| re: Punta Cana, DR vs. St. Lucia for Honeymoon Destination - LSUtigerME on 12/2/13 at 9:15 pm|
I've been to both. St. Lucia by far.
Excellence is a little cheaper, and pretty similar. I thought food was better at Sandals, and things were more laid back and open. At Excellence the pool closed at 6:00 PM. Only one restaurant open past 9:00. A lot less people though.
Both are far from the...

| Money Talk|| re: VW sign and drive lease - anyone with experience? - LSUtigerME on 11/25/13 at 9:14 pm|
You should be able to look up VW's turn-in procedure/booklet/etc. Many manufacturers give you certain allowances and things. Honda gives you a $1500 credit, $500 max per panel, and doesn't worry about certain size dings, etc.
Leasing can be great if you definitely will be replacing cars often a...

What kind of TV? Surge protector?
My plasma blew out by a lightning strike. Guy took the back off, checked the power supply panel, which he thought was bad, and it was working fine. Turned out to be the "main board", which is where HDMI and other connection run though. Cost me $400 total (60" Pla...
| Money Talk|| re: Bit coins... I want the general definition - LSUtigerME on 11/19/13 at 10:18 pm|
[quote]The value of a Bitcoin is determined solely by how much a buyer is willing to pay for it. So the value comes from someone else being willing to purchase the Bitcoin for equal or greater price at some point in the future. That is unlike a share of stock since the price a buyer will pay for the...

I haven't looked at CreditKarma, will have to check it out.

Of those choices, I'd lean Corolla/Camry.
Any reason an Accord is not on the list? The 4cyl is probably the best of the bunch in terms of power with great fuel efficiency.

| Money Talk|| re: Why hybrid adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) are good for short-term homeowners. - LSUtigerME on 11/15/13 at 7:43 am|
I strongly considered one when I refinanced my house. Plan to be here for 5-7 years, and I think the maximum increase was less than 5%, which made my maximum rate under 7%. I had a little fear I may be here longer, and the fees/credits I was given for the conventional made up some of the difference....
| Money Talk|| re: PhD or Masters in Physics for an Engineering Company - LSUtigerME on 11/13/13 at 6:44 pm|
I can't speak for those companies in particular, but generally a PhD is not required. A masters can help. The PhD isn't going to necessarily "hurt" you (some people claim it may), but if you want to be outside of a research field, I don't think the time spent pursuing the PhD will be worthwhile....

| Money Talk|| re: Postponing 401k contributions to pay of debts - LSUtigerME on 11/11/13 at 10:33 am|
Since your employer contributes 4%, put in at least the 5% to match it. If you can't live without that money, put it in "after-tax" get your match, then withdraw your contribution. That way you still get your match by basically contributing nothing. Take the free money when it's available.

| Money Talk|| re: Residual value on car - LSUtigerME on 11/8/13 at 6:51 am|
You're comparing "trade-in" to Dealer Retail. There's a huge difference there. A majority of that difference is coming from the initial value you're trying to compare.
The good news is depreciation slows significantly over time (relative to initial price). Don't sweat it until you're actually lo...

$489 @ 0% is not bad on that car. It's also a very reliable vehicle. The Nissan V6 is practically bulletproof. Should last for years. I'd really consider keeping it over trading to an older VW.
As mentioned, paying that $2k off will give you the $200/mo breathing room it sounds like you need....
