re: City Park Championship Golf Course- Somme oppose it - vistajay
you wanna see some freaks....go ride through Scout Island in City Park......I swear the gutter punks are holding cult sacrifices over there. It's one of the scariest places in the city.
I'm afraid to go running through there and Coutierie Forest. Cars are parked at the entrance al...

re: City Park Championship Golf Course- Somme oppose it - vistajay
Since Katrina until the fences went up I have gone running where the new course is being built several times a week in the morning. I also drive by it several times a day. There are VERY few people who use that area of the park for walking, meditation, running or anything else. I rarely see anyon...

re: Rummel's enrollment numbers dwindling and principal to resign - vistajay
My Jesuit 8th grader has a book of PSAT/SAT vocabulary that he has to use and make note cards from for English class, so yes it starts as early as 8th grade. Doing well on the PSAT meant a National Merit scholarship for my daughter worth full tuition at her private college, equaling about $185,00...

re: What's your favorite/least favorite year in the 90's? - vistajay
Best: 1992- in law school but not worried about a job yet. Got married. Worst: 1993- job prospects grim and had to move to the cultural wasteland of Texas. Still being broke in as a husband. After that things evened out a bit....

Sounds like you've looked into it deeper than just assuming that Franklin kids are "weird" or "socially awkward." ?? Good luck!...

re: Rummel's enrollment numbers dwindling and principal to resign - vistajay
Franklin is a great school. You should at least check it out and talk to current parents of students. But it's not for everyone. Your child has to be self motivated and unafraid of competition. ...

Lots of Lusher kids still go to Franklin. I keep waiting for Lusher HS to reach the level where they retain their best middle school students, but it's not happening yet. ...
No doubt. My class of 83 sent 12 kids to Vanderbilt, many to Duke, Emory and the like, and multiple to multiple Ivy's. You won't see that again with the current cost structure of education.
I think a better barometer of a high school's excellence right now is how many graduates are...
TOPS changed the game for Newman and other expensive schools for college choices. In my class 2 kids went to LSU and 3 to Tulane out of 83.
Also the great expense of college has changed the game. Even a Newman parent has to think hard about spending $240,000 to send their child to...
A lot of St Catherine kids go to Jesuit. I would say half my class went to Jesuit.
Yea but more pertinent to this thread where are the other half going these days? Not Rummel apparently. I went to St. Francis Xavier in the 80s and the vast majority of the boys went to Rummel. Now a...

re: New NOLA brewery project on Lafitte Greenway - vistajay
Crime is of course a problem that has to be addressed, but I love how the naysayers commenting on the NOLA.com article act like one should never invest in a neighborhood because of potential crime. If that were the standard that all employed, we wouldn't have the Warehouse District or Freret Street...
Trinity has always sent a good deal of kids to jesuit
In the last ten years or so Trinity only sent 1-2 kids a year to Jesuit, except for the past 2 years when it increased to 8-10 a year. But my point was that Jesuit does not want a class full of just CBS and Stuart Hall kids, ot...

New NOLA brewery project on Lafitte Greenway - vistajay
This looks like it could be awesome. Would love to see NOLA get more local breweries. Anyone know anything about this? http://www.nola.com/business/index.ssf/2015/02/developers_hope_to_convert_ind.html ...
I've heard that Jesuit is taking a harder look at CBS students due to some recent problems with the students coming from there.
I don't think there is a problem with CBS students. CBS expanded a few years ago, and Jesuit just can't take all of them anymore. They may take 80 CBS kid...

re: Should dress codes become gender neutral at Mardi Gras balls? - vistajay
Endymion is actually more strict about is dress code than the snobbier balls. One year my wife was pregnant and had a floor length dress for the Endymion ball that she had purchased a month or so prior. By the time we got to the ball my wife was showing quite a bit more, and the floor length dress...

I work on the 4th floor so I take the stairs every time. I haven't used the elevator in my office in over a month. Still, most of my 10,000-12,000 steps a day occur after work at home when I am moving around the house, walking the dog etc......

re: Why does Comus still not parade? - vistajay
I was just a wee lad but I too remember it as an otherworldly event. They sped by almost without regard to the few onlookers, yet there was something stately in their practically mute adherence to the tradition of parading. And there are many other Carnival organizations in NOLA that do not para...
