If you withdraw the money from the 401k you will pay tax and a 10% penalty on the earnings.
My advice:
1. Roll the 401k into a Rollover IRA at Scott.
2. Fund a Roth IRA there also after you have your emergency fund set up.
3. Invest in broad based mutual funds/etfs....

Just got back to Houston after three days in the Medina/Bandera area. Rut is definitely over but we saw tons of dear around the area. We hunted at different times throughout the day but saw virtually nothing on the leases during the daylight hours. I think our deer have had too much pressure and fig...

Trading commissions would be my guess. Although alot of those are waived if you buy the Schwab branded funds/etfs.
There are fees/expenses built into funds/etfs. Look at the expense rations for the individual funds/etfs....

My wife and I have most of our accounts with Schwab. Extremely pleased but I am comfortable managing our finances. Schwab does give advice. My 9 yr just took his first dump in the woods. Made a real racket getting out of this small box stand in a hurry. Hopefully we didn't run them all off. Maybe no deer today but there was at least one first today!
