2x12s will work fine.
5-6 pounds of 8-8-8 per 300 square feet 3-4 weeks after planting and again 3-4 weeks later.
Home gardeners like to over fertilize, which can lead to soil ph alterations and end up hurting in the long run.
Also just watch the pest impact on the plants before pesticide...

I've used the Pet Safe wireless system which can cover a 1/2 acre and it works really well. Just don't ever let your dog jump in the car with the collar on because it will immediately go off.
Never used an in ground system, but I am looking at them because the size of our yard.
