[quote]Black-Scholes in its pure form is not used by some monolithic firm called "Wall Street", or even by most firms in the investment community. That model was developed back in the early 70's and flaws in the bell curve assumption were quickly recognized, most firms pretty quickly made their own ...

Also, how is it possible for small caps to offer outsized average returns, when an efficient market should wipe this away? Maybe it's merely because the accepted mathematics of beta, risk, etc unfairly characterize the underlying value, leading to a market price that is actually less than the underl...

The interesting thing is how "on average" and "as a whole" small caps have been great performers versus other asset classes, or at least that is what they told us in school.
Naturally there is an enormously wide distribution of returns among the individual small cap investments. In any skewed dis...

I had some of the same thoughts when I was going through grad school finance.
To me, risk is different than volatility. Beta is often used as a measure of "risk" characterizing an investment. Just for fun, try calculating beta using different time windows cross-plotted against market returns - da...

Naturally it's all relative to where you are financially and where you want to be. Currently I am considering a pay cut for some of those factors. But I have modest tastes and a good bit of savings, so any money over a certain income level I just don't care much about (my marginal utility curve flat...
