The southern MS/state line area has a late rut. On my place near McLain, MS, the best bucks are killed at the end of january.
Before that you have to use dogs or corn....

That's an amazing set of photos in that article. It looks like if you can just avoid the temptation of shooting him at 2.5 and even 3.5, you would have a real trophy to hunt from 4.5 to 10.5 years.
As far as FTF's original question, no clue. I'd like to see a study on that similar to that article...

Outside of a high fence, managing genetics is pissin in the wind.
You can manage for maturity on a large tract or with cooperative neighbors.
you can supplement the diet on any size tract to improve the herd and get better hunting.
I hunt for the enjoyment of being in the wild and pursuing deer...

At my 40 acres in Desoto National Forest, dog hunters in the area follow "brown is down", so I hunted like that too. We only saw a few deer a year there so if we wanted venison we shot the first legal deer we saw.
At my club in AR, we follow state regs as best we can, but several spikes (oops) ge...

If he seawall is too rough, head out to Irish Bayou and fish the two bridges on Hwy 11.
People fish there all the time and I often see then swinging trout over the railing as I drive by.
Hwy 90 at Chef Pass/Bayou Marquez can be good too.
If you don't have one of those fancy buckets with a swivel ...

It's going to be tough to have real conversations or make real friendships just talking unless you are actually in the game.
At least get a rod and reel and take up catch and release on some fish local to your area. I have never released a fish that was edible and legal, but to each his own. Pe...

The few times I've had mine processed, I wend to Armond's on OST in Slidell (previously on Gause in Slidell and was originally in Da Parish).
they are good, and the tamales are great.
I usually do my own processing....
| Outdoor Board|| re: Spin off: who processes their own deer meat? - dat yat on 11/29/14 at 8:37 pm|
I do my own processing most of the time. Cut out the tenderloins and braise rare soon after the kill. The shanks are a delicacy, brown, roast on the bone and eat caveman style. Cut the back straps into steaks or roasts and slice off scapula for shoulder roasts.
The remainder of the forelegs and rum...
