I worked with a fellow who worked for the state of louisiana and he owed back taxes on a couple of years granted they were around 3-4K and not what you owe but the state of louisiana just garnished his check for so much each pay check until he could finish paying off in one lump sum or he would just...

you can get penalized by closing a card because it lowers you potential debt to earnings ratio or something like that but if you don't use the $500 dollar one very much I don't see a drawback to closing it unless you have had it for several years.
