Many of the country bands that Ive listened to over the past 20 years were born out of people playng punk rock and getting older... so, its not that weird of a concept...
Uncle Tupelo, Whiskeytown, Bloodshot Label, etc..
There are usually still elements of that in the "country" they make...

Yeah, they also had a darker edge to theie sound, where Pavement was more playful, silly...
If they were ever gonna have a hit, this would have been it.. probably their most radio friendly song..

That comparison has been made before, but listen to all their records and you'll see a big difference... They are a lot more stonesy, blues based..
Also, they were around before Pavement (who I love, too)

I associate hipster with a look more than music they listen too... Most people are just listing indie bands from VU to today..
When I was younger the term was "slacker" hipster is still relatively new.....
