I am curious as to why someone who patronizes these places reads a food board? Food quality is obviously not a priority.
Just wondering. ...
| Food and Drink Board|| re: Food that has gotten expensive - andouille on 2/18/15 at 12:29 pm|
Meat has become expensive, best buy I can think of are the rotisserie chickens from Costco or Sam's at <$5. My wife and I can generally get 2 or 3 meals out of one by using the meat for either soup, stir fry, gumbo, stew or whatever.
We have a self imposed limit of no more than 1 chicken every 2...

Costco in BR has live mussels at an great price of $2.99 lb., the pack date on them was today, so I bought a 4.5lb bag for a little over $13.
I have only had mussels once, in Paris, and have never cooked them, with a little research In found Ina Garten's recipe:

We went last night and overall ,my first impression was pretty good. At 6pm on a Tuesday it was pretty empty so service was not a problem, everything we ordered came out on time and getting drinks was not a problem.
On Tuesday grilled oysters are $1 each, we got a half dozen and they were excelle...

The FQ does tend to be a Jurassic Park of creole cuisine, and that's a good think. NO has plenty of fresh innovative restaurants, but if someone wants to eat from a 100 y/o menu selection, they should have that choice.
I hope I never see another, shrimp remoulade, trout almandine, bread pudding ...

The key word is Alabama.
In 2007 I was tailgating with some Alabama friends at BDS, one of the guys had made a pot of seafood gumbo. It looked great, full of shrimp, crabmeat, oysters, a dark roux. I complimented the chef and he handed me a big bowl, nothing. No seasoning at all, a mild saltines...

My long time experience with people from Alabama and Arkansas is that they have zero culinary sophistication. There are exceptions, I have not met many.

| Food and Drink Board|| re: Pat's on Jefferson - andouille on 1/9/15 at 1:02 pm|
I fail to understand the popularity of the batter barns. Even if Pat's is judged to be excellent by the FDB, it is unlikely I will ever dine there. Sammy's, Mike Anderson's, R&K etc might as well be a chain. The menu choices are almost identical.
| Food and Drink Board|| re: Food savers - Seal A Meal. Anybody own one? - andouille on 1/6/15 at 12:47 pm|
I have a Foodsaver that was about $120, it's about 5 y/o and still works like new. I also use it to reseal things we don't use a lot, like cellophane bags that noodles come in, cereal bags, crackers, chips.
I also have to attachment that is like a wine cork to take the air out of a half used bot...

Not familiar with that smell coming from fresh meat. I got food poisoning in 1978, I know how much I would have paid to be rid of the misery, it was 100,000X the food cost.
I have never risked it since then. Take it back. ...

I don't want to hijack a thread, but I'm in the 280 corridor frequently and very interested if you know of some. We hit the chains mostly and that also Mudtown Cafe east of the Summit.
We usually try to stay south of 459, recently tried the Dixie Fish Company 5/10, but I wouldn't go there frequ...

I have, took everyone there to celebrate granddaughter's dance recital. I figured in B'ham it was a safe choice, I was wrong.

I was watching a show on the Cooking Channel, some woman from New York was learning how to crawfish, she was walking out pulling up the traps, she seemed to be a good sport about it.
