re: U.S. debt to asset ratio is better than 1:7 - RedStickBR
It's a good point, but like with any credit analysis, a solvency-based metric like this should be combined with numerous other metrics. Debt-to-GDP of 100% is entirely too high, and we could be spending nearly 1/10 of our budget on net debt service alone in the future - those are real dollars th...

Assuming for the sake of this hypothetical that reserve value correlates nearly perfectly with oil price (down 33% since 01/10), the debt to equity ratio would be 27%. But it appears he's referring only to mineral assets and not all assets, too....

Interesting. That would be a debt to equity ratio of 16%-17% - low by most standards. What is China's? Of course, we'd need to consider how liquid (in terms of cash conversion, not oil mix) those massive underground reserves are and, more recently, whether they could be developed economically....

Right, but country output is akin to company revenue, and country debt at least resembles company debt. So maybe a better analogy would have been to refer to a company's debt-adjusted revenue per share. In any event, I think some attempt to normalize comparisons between the two for debt can b...

Some oil and gas exploration and production companies provide a metric called "debt-adjusted earnings per share." This metric basically shows what the company's earnings per share would be if all it's debt were converted to equity at current market prices and allows analysts to discern whether t...

New York could be overly policed. It's certainly overly taxed, overly regulated, and perhaps overly "lawed." I'm simply highlighting a sociopolitical distinction. It's not uncommon for police to take small infractions seriously in NYC, and I'd venture to bet the majority of the citizens and bu...

Policing in New York City - RedStickBR
New York employs broken-window policing, a philosophy implemented by Rudy Guiliani which punishes low-level crimes (like selling untaxed cigarettes) with harsh penalties. The thought goes that being extremely strict on things like graffiti and panhandling will result in a more orderly society, which...
I agree with this. The fact that the cop was not charged after he broke police protocol and acted in a manner that resulted in the death of a non-violent suspect is outrageous and give credence to the claims of racial disparities in our criminal justice system.
Right, but part o...
Did you see the video? The cop was an a-hole. Again, under no circumstances did Gardner do anything to deserve death.
Look, you're not doing anyone any good by making these emotional statements that aren't grounded in reality. Let's frame the debate correctly. It's in the proc...

Yeah, the lesser charge could be brought I believe. It just doesn't make sense to bring murder and manslaughter at times, for the aforementioned reasons. I absolutely believe prosecutors are impacted by public pressure. There was widespread speculation Angela Corey fell victim to this in the Tra...

I think its a social problem. I'm not sure re: the facts of each case, but to the extent prosecutors felt pressured to bring murder charges in the Trayvon/MB/EG cases, I think that's inappropriate as it appears to me none of those cases involved clear cut first-degree murder. The problem of cours...

I suspect they can, but the reasoning I've always heard for not doing so is that it weakens your case for the stronger charge you're trying to bring. If you're trying to make a case for something as serious as murder, but also present that it could be manslaughter, it makes one wonder whether mur...

Again, if the prosecutor feels public pressure to bring murder when murder isn't present, then it's more likely to result in a no true bill than if he would have brought the more reasonable but lesser charge in the first place. That's precisely why all the Al Sharptons and rioting masses only mak...

re: So was Garner put in a choke hold or not? - RedStickBR
Manslaughter may have been a slam dunk. But when the rioting masses, most of which aren't trained in the law, exert public pressure on a prosecutor to bring a murder charge when murder isn't present, it presents a perfect opportunity for a wily (to use boosie's word) prosecutor to bring a murder cha...
