re: Lafayette - sell house or rent - CajunTiger92
The Florida collapse a few years ago was probably pretty similar to what happen in Lafayette and surrounding area in the 80s. Big boom to big bust. It took awhile to come back but it did and then some. I think Houston could probably get hit pretty hard this time around though if prices stay low...

re: Lafayette - sell house or rent - CajunTiger92
The mid to late 80s real estate market in Lafayette was a complete and utter disaster. You couldn't find a UHaul trailer anywhere around Lafayette because people were moving out so fast. I knew someone that bought a house about the same size as yours for around $38k. Things were somewhat different...

re: is it time to start owning oil and gas? looking at halliburton - CajunTiger92
If this downturn is anything like when the Saudis drove the price down in the 80s, then we are in the early innings. Buying bits of strong balance sheet companies as they go down from here is a decent way to play this. Prices though may not snap back as fast as some think. ...

re: Has there been any rumors about candidates for governor? - CajunTiger92
Vitter does have the upper hand regarding political leader support. I'm sure he's made plenty of friends dolling out federal money. However, that alone does not win elections. If it did, Mary would still have a job. This will be one of the more interesting governor races we've had in a while....

re: Cashin: The worst Monday of all, nearly 30 years on - CajunTiger92
I was fairly new to investing in the stock market when it crashed in 1987. I seem to remember that the market in Asia was down big before the open in the US. After it was all over, commentators on FNN (precursor to CNBC) were talking about how retirees were wiped out in a single day. Watching the t...

re: $1,000 into DRIP for child - which company? - CajunTiger92
Allowing the child to pick from a group of stocks is a good idea for reasons already mentioned. You didn't mention if the account would be a custodial account (ie., in the child's name). If so, I would think again about that. ...
This is why people lose all of their money.
How do people lose all of their money selling a covered call? If the stock goes down and you want to sell the stock then just buy the call back. The calls will be at a price lower than what you sold it. If the price goes up and the cal...
