re: Buffett weighs in on min wage: MW=suck, EITC=awesome - 90proofprofessional
I think some form of EITC should be the foundation of any set of policies for a "War on Poverty". That'd be way better than our current setup that largely fails to incentivize work....

re: Why is "taking less profit" never on the table? - 90proofprofessional
Without laws, I could pay that person $5 per hour. He or she can't live on that. That is of little benefit. I can't argue "it is only worth $5 per hour" because he can say "then dig the damn ditch yourself."
Just like he could have done if there were no min wage. ...

You can post that shite as many times as you like but it will still remain poor reasoning, contradicted by both uncontroversial basic microeconomic theory + empirical research. Anything Reich says on this subject --> toilet...

re: Buffett weighs in on min wage: MW=suck, EITC=awesome - 90proofprofessional
Does he propose how we're going to pay for all that?
Not needing to raise taxes is probably the main reason MW is so popular as a "anti-poverty" measure. Problem is, it's not a good one. EITC is superior, but yes, it costs the taxpayer in much more direct ways- there's its politi...

Buffett weighs in on min wage: MW=suck, EITC=awesome - 90proofprofessional
Is his analysis sound?
I may wish to have all jobs pay at least $15 an hour. But that minimum would almost certainly reduce employment in a major way, crushing many workers possessing only basic skills. Smaller increases, though obviously welcome, will still leave many hardworking Americans ...

I actually don't even like Sowell that much But if you're talking about econ Reich is a complete and total joke compared to him I knew I'd get a rise out of her by making that obvious comparison...
Sowell is a weak patronizer of the right wing. Reich has actually engaged in economic practice when he was Secretary of Labor. I'd put Tim Robbins up against Sowell in a debate.
:NicCageLaugh:...
Let the workers, collectively, hammer it out with management. Isn't THAT the American Way?
I don't know if that's the American Way, or not. Those words don't really have much objective meaning. I do know that allowing (much less enforcing) a full monopolization of the labor force...

re: The effect of social justice on free markets - 90proofprofessional
It is an example of how the free market can sometimes fail to work in the way that free-marketers like to imagine that it always does. In this example, you see what is supposed to be a valuable and generally-reliable information channel completely hijacked, and failing to accurately relay informa...
The con's say that it will result in businesses laying off workers, and/or raising prices for consumers, because "there's no way the business will accept less profit." That is stated as a given. Why?
Your premise is wrong. It doesn't result in disemployment/ price increases because...
