Theres a lot more to upgrade than just the pickups. Pots, Caps, Jacks, Switches all make a difference. Replacing the nut can help depending on your preferences, also replacing the bridge can make a huge difference tonally.

If you aren't married to el84s I'd suggest that you take a serious look at a silverface fender champ. They're small, relatively inexpensive, and sound great; it's small but it's not an amp that you will outgrow and some classic albums have been recorded with them. Check YouTube and eBay....
