Scenario doesn't sound legit. Most unemployment applications ask if you were 1) laid off 2) quit 3) discharged. The default setting for laid off will set-up benefits.

I still think ansel Adams' trilogy is the best resource out there , and you can get on amazon for less than $15. The Camera's the most useful, and there's some stuff in the negative and print that transcends film.
Michael freeman has a few books on composition that are pretty useful for beginner...
