In my experience it depends on how you use it. If a deer is under the feeder when it goes off then yes it's going to scare them. I've seen them run off and at times come right back. My dirt contractor dug out the topsoil to the clay base and back filled with clay to the surface level then put a layer of topsoil on top and packed it. Its hard and packed right now. It has good drainage on both sides with swells dug to a frontage ditch to catch the run off.
