Excercise can stimulate cartilage repair for minor things and make it tougher, much like running increases your muscle mass and bone density....

Research has shown there is very little to no correlation to people with worn out cartilage and running and some studies even suggest that it can improve your knees.
Like anything taken to the extreme it can be rough on your body but I doubt you are putting in 200 miles a week...
