Good choice. I've had good experiences with Chevrolet trucks. The 4.8L was surprisingly powerful for an entry level V8.
I prefer the newer small blocks to the older 305 and 350. Having owned both, I appreciate the flatter-feeling torque curve in the newer motors. I don't like peaky motors ...

I'm pretty careful with maintenance....more so than most people, I imagine. I think how a car is maintained plays a bigger role in how long it lasts than the brand.

I've owned high mileage GM vehicles from model years 1995, 2002 and 2007. I believe all but the 1995 model used different variants of that proprietary coolant. I've never once had issues with them (and this includes some heavy towing in high elevations).....but I do follow the maintenance guideli...

If it's a GM, it uses an oily type of coolant called Dexcool. It's not a bad product in of itself, but you can't mix it with any off the shelf coolant.
You need to get your radiator repaired....then switch over to an more common, interchangeable type of coolant. ...
