So all the soldiers who serve this country that just so happen to not own any land, they don't get to vote? You good sir are an idiot.

Because letting everyone automatically vote once they turn 18 and register has worked out so well, right? I can think of 16 Trillion points that disagree with that.

I wouldn't mind currently serving and honorably discharged members of the military being able to vote, but a better way would be to give them land grants as was originally done for veterans until the Spanish-American War.

No, change it back to having to be a land-owner in order to vote.

While I agree in principal with what you are saying and alot on this board would also agree, be careful of what you ask/wish for. I'm a home owner not a renter by definition. But i'm not a land owner nor are most Americans. I like most have a mortgage, which means the bank ownes my property and I'm paying them off over time. So going back to land owners would put most of the votes in the hands of the banks which is something I don't think you are actually wanting.

Business entities (like banks) could not vote.

I see what you are saying about mortgages, but I think having to pay property tax would pass muster (thus also including things like condos).

I've noticed how empowered the left on this board has become since the election. There were only a handful in here leading up to the election. Hope and Change, Forward!

Would be tantamount to a poll tax, which was prohibited by Constitutional amendment back in the 60's.

Which is a shame considering how many people that pay no taxes now vote in people that raise taxes on those that pay them.

re: Your vote should be public and go on record
Just to summarize my view of some of things said in this thread.

Land ownership/property as a requirement really wouldn't solve our problem. Neither would only letting those who pay taxes solve it.

As long as we run a system where it is POSSIBLE for 51% of the people to vote themselves money from the other 49%, it really doesn't matter if you restrict voting to only those with a stake currently.

Yes, it would mean the current non stakeholders would be out of the decision making process BUT, people seem to miss the obvious.

If you did this, then it would simply be a matter of whomever resides at the bottom 51% of those allowed to vote stealing from the 49%. I mean let's face it, it aint like the middle class doesn't like it's goodies. If you restricted voting to only the top 50% of Americans, then you can bet your rat's ass, a shade over half of them would be voting to take money from a shade under half.

The problem isn't who is allowed to vote. The problem is that our system allows theft by ballot box. It is nice an anonymous and people can feel good about themselves while they do it. The same person who would NEVER band with 10 other folks to rob the guy with the big house down the street will happily vote with 10 other folks to do exactly that.

Could you imagine the death squads and violence with such an open society. Think about a poor girl in Philly wearing a Romney T-Shirt to school and what happened to her? We are a tolerant society but only up to a point.

One problem, a lot of Obama voters don't pay taxes, so there is nothing to raise

They used to be known as Australian ballots, when the concept was first introduced in America, more than 100 years after its founding. Until then, it was a completely foreign concept in our Republic, and has only been universally embraced in the past 100 or so years.

As with your cohort in this thread, don't confuse my history lesson with an endorsement of one system or a criticism of another.
