i dont know when people will wake up and realize that republicans are just as 'big government' as democrats.

Tesla enthusiasts are urging Gov. John Bel Edwards to veto legislation the electric car company says will threaten future sales of the vehicles in Louisiana.
The electric car brand is sold through a direct-to-customer model, rather than the franchise dealership relationships that other auto manufacturers use. The amendment strips language in law that allows limited exemptions to a state ban on manufacturer-to-consumer sales.
Rep. Tanner Magee, a Houma Republican, said his amendment was added at the request of the Louisiana Auto Dealers Association and meant only to tighten the existing law.
Sen. Bodi White, a Central Republican who sponsored the original bill dealing with law enforcement vehicles, said he didn't expect the House amendment to court controversy.
White supports the amended bill and said he doesn't expect the governor will veto it.

Most people aren't really for free markets to begin with unfortunately.

I weigh 150 and I like food. 600 pound people like food, too. We're all alike.

"Tesla can come in and get a license if they want to sell cars," he said.
Except that, according to the amendment and current law, licenses are only granted to franchise dealerships and not manufacturers.

I don't know that I agree that Republicans are "just as" big government as Democrats; but many of them are far more addicted to fedgov than they admit.

Nothing stopping Tesla from opening a dealership is what they are saying.
However, these are definitely some antiquated laws that need to go.

In this case they are addicted to campaign funds which come from the auto dealership cabal.

How does Tesla even makes money if every car they sell is at a loss ?

Most Republicans aren't for small government. They are for governments that is friendly to established business interests. Hence the bone thrown to auto dealers.

well yes, but shouldn't a free market system allow tesla to sell their cars however they want?

Well, it's the very definition of circular logic.
"The law requires you do X"
"The law is antiquated and we'd rather do Y"
"Yeah, but under the law you can simply do X"

Probably, but we're not a completely free market, we never were, and we will never will be.
And I think you'd be VERY hard pressed to find anyone who would support such. I mean in a real free market, I could keep my kitchen as clean as I wanted, or as dirty, and if people didn't want to die, they could choose another place to eat, for example.

How does the knowledge that Tesla has banked approximately $4 Billion in government subsidies factor into this principled discussion of the free market?

I don't know, so I'm asking.
If manufacturers cannot sell cars in Louisiana, how did Saturn do it?

Correct, in a "free market" GM would have went under, and Tesla wouldn't have existed in the first place.
We're a quasi free market.

...and?

What was that quote about people not really wanting to see a free man, cause of they did, it'd scare the hell out of them?
Something like that.
Something like that.

Saturn was a subsidy of GM and their cars were sold at GM dealerships.
