I saw this in a FB post. Winning side pays the taxes necessary for their "agenda". If you cast your vote for the losing side and your policies aren't implemented you don't pay your taxes. I guess this is a "If you want it your way, have some skin in the game" scenario

At a minimum it's interesting.

I'd rather eliminate withholding and then see where that gets us

The only way it would work is if everyone's vote were public record which is one of the worst ideas ever.

I assume it doesn't have to be public. I'm sure there is a way to log that somehow. And I'm pretty sure the gov't already tracks our votes.

If such high percentages of people already don't pay their bills for college, homes, and cars, why would we expect it to be any different for income taxes?

Tax payments would definitely be made at lower payment rates. Am I wrong?

What if you don't vote or don't like either major party? Do you get to skip out on taxes altogether?

Which is why you originally had to own land to be able to vote.

Like someone else already said, this only works if you do away with secret ballots. If we're going to continue on this road anyways, I would ask what happens to the 70% of folks who don't vote?

Also, what about working teens that are too young to vote, but still have taxes pulled from their checks?

Hey I didn't create the scenario, I just thought it was interesting enough to share.

Withholding taxes were a wartime creation that were supposed to end when the war ended. Once the gravy train
of getting their hands on the publics money was realized, they changed their minds and spent the money on other "important" stuff.

Then you also shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the benefits.

That's kind of my point. We all "enjoy the benefits" of what the government does regardless of whether our candidate (if we have one) is the one who wins. It's one reason why the talk of taxes being paid by only the voters of the winning side is ridiculous.

Agreed, it's silly.

With partisan politics becoming so vile, it seems that this possibility isn't too far in the future. Look at the people who (at least) claim they won't be paying taxes b/c of DJT. Doing what's best for the country should be for every American, not just the winning team for that particular cycle. Plus, it opens Pandora's box like a MF

Id love this. There should be a baseline of taxes for the government to run: defense(Rand Paul level, not McCain level), infrastructure, enforcement of law...everything else you check a box for

That would be incredibly stupid to do and impossible to implement. What is technically possible, would be to allow people to specify categories for a percentage of their tax dollars to go towards. Allow them to designate a portion for military, a portion for welfare, a portion for Medicaid, etc. Also, make a website available where people can look to see what is funded and how many tax dollars were designated to it. That way, they could shift their "contributions" if they think a particular department has enough money. This way, each side's pet departments/projects/spending priorities can be funded in the amount they personally are willing to support.

I would like to see withholding eliminated so people can really feel how much they are paying in taxes.

It would ensure extremely low voter turnout among conservatives. Then the Dems who don't pay taxes anyways will still vote.

Then we go bankrupt
