Why is the United States abandoning Syrian Kurds in Kobane?

The Pentagon just said a few hours ago that they "don't have permission" to defend Syrian Kurds in Kobane as it doesn't fall in their mission to degrade and destroy ISIS. For a week, dozens of ISIS vehicles have been in plain sight and would have been easy pickings for coalition airstrikes. Seems like picking off hundreds of ISIS fighters would be part of the mission to destroy ISIS, but what do I know.

You would have thought we would have helped our allies on the ground, the Kurdish YPG being one of the most capable ground forces in this region. Instead we have abandoned them and they will likely be slaughtered wholesale by ISIS once Kobane falls, and what YPG remain will likely never trust the Americans again. A whole lot of sense this Syrian "war" is making!

They abandoned me to Cobain and Nirvana back in the 90s. Why should they treat that Kobane any different?

The military doesn't know what its Terms of Engagement are from Obama.

It's absolutely impossible to have any long term plan in place in a country where every policy decision revolves around the next election cycle.

We are trying to drive Turkey into the fight. I expect Turkey to join coalition within a week. Promise them a slice of Syria.

When Democrats are involved that is the truth.

I don't think they want increasing Kurdish influence in that area of their country.

Then what was this all about?:

"US-led planes strike fighters attacking Syria town"
Associated Press
By BASSEM MROUE September 27, 2014 1:54 PM

" U.S.-led coalition warplanes struck Islamic State fighters in Syria attacking a town near the Turkish border for the first time Saturday, as well as positions in the country's east, activists and a Kurdish official said."

"Nawaf Khalil, a spokesman for Syria's Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, said the strikes targeted Islamic State positions near Kobani, also known as Ayn Arab, destroying two tanks. He said the jihadi fighters later shelled the town, wounding a number of civilians."

"The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the coalition's strikes near Kobani came amid heavy fighting between the Islamic State group and members of the Kurdish force known as the People's Protection Units, or YPK."

Has their been a change in the past two days on the rules of engagement. i.e., "don't have permission", surrounding Kobane? If so, due to effects crossing over into Turkish territory?

Here's another interesting bit of input from someone on the ground there in Kobane ("Kobani"):

“But in fact, we do not need fighters. We have enough,” Mustafa said. “We do not even need airstrikes. We urgently need weapons. We need antitank rockets and other heavy weapons to face the tanks, mortars and artillery.” The Islamic State militants “have everything, and that makes them superior to us militarily,” he added.

Someone is going to need to occupy the space of ISIS. Turkey is working on an energy independence agreement with the Kurds already. I think the post colonial political boundaries of the region will be redrawn to accommodate the realities of the sectarian divide. Still, Turkey is going to need to make a choice and soon. This war is going to carry over across its borders either way.

It would suck to be a Turkish soldier right now. Quite a few of them are going to find themselves across one of its borders fairly soon. With the size of Turkey's military, they'll be in the middle of it very soon.

The more important question is, when are you going to release Michelle's Whitey Tape? You promised us 6 years now. You're less responsible than a Josh Chamberlain.

Looks like Kobane will fall in the next 24 hours. Probably 10k+ civilians/YPG will be slaughtered. We could have easily knocked out >100 ISIS armored vehicles and probably 1-2k ISIS soldiers with a comprehensive air campaign there.
