why is the divide so great now, or has it always been this way?

Social Media?
I mean it seems like every day there are new conspirices about what the left is doing. When W was in charge it was the same thing but flipped.
Do people in this country even want to make it work?
It just seems like now with Facebook someone can share an extreme far right or far left post and a few days later everyone looks at it like fact.

I as talking to a guy that said BO only won because he was black. I said he only won because he wasn't a Republican. The first election was a protest, the other was just a bad candidate.
It just seems that everything needs a conspiracy.
I will say I voted (D) twice, but I think he has failed us and at this point I do regret not having Romney or better yet McCain as president.

The sixties were vicious. A conspiracy of bankers tried to depose FDR in a military coup. There was the whole Civil War thing, of course. It's always been bad. Jefferson warned us against political parties, but our form of government is set up in such a way that factions are a natural byproduct.

It's always been this way. We aren't nearly as divided as we were in the 60's though.

I honestly think Romney was a good candidate, and would've been a good president. His problem was that he ran a lousy campaign. It was like 1988 in reverse, with Romney playing the role of Dukakis and letting the opposition throw one negative charge after another at him without fighting back. I actually thought Romney really caught his stride the last 6 weeks of the campaign, but not fighting back on the phony accusations, like the phony war on women thing, cost him the election.
I know this. Karl Rove should be put in prison for embezzlement for the millions he made off of the 2012 election. That dude might know the demographics and dynamics of every county in the country, but his actual campaign strategy sucked.
Imo, Rove is easily the second-most overrated person in the country. I wouldn't hire him if I were running for dog catcher.
The political climate was pretty bad in Thomas Jefferson's day, btw. They even had a duel or two.

It's been way worse. Go read about what our founding fathers called each other in the early days of our republic. Today's divide is more like a pillow fight. One guy (in the 1800s I believe) beat the holy cow out of another representative in chambers. The name calling was more "colorful" back then.
Here we are
Wow, one guy, Keitt, stopped others from helping Sumner by holding a pistol. Anchorman's "there just talking" line come to mind.

On February 5, 1858, Keitt started a massive brawl on the House floor during a tense late-night debate. Keitt, offended by Pennsylvania Congressman (and later Speaker of the House) Galusha A. Grow having stepped over to his side of the House chamber, dismissively demanded that Grow sit down, calling him a "black Republican puppy". Grow responded by telling Keitt that "No negro-driver shall crack his whip over me." Keitt became enraged and went for Grow's throat, shouting that he would "choke [him] for that". A large brawl involving approximately 50 representatives erupted on the House floor, ending only when a missed punch from Rep. Cadwallader Washburn of Wisconsin upended the hairpiece of Rep. William Barksdale of Mississippi. The embarrassed Barksdale accidentally replaced the wig backwards, causing both sides to erupt in spontaneous laughter.[2][3]

We have an enormous cultural divide that blossomed in the 60's and has continued since. You have a group that wants to CONSERVE traditional American principles, traditions, ideals and Institutions versus a group that wants to TRANSFORM traditional principles, traditions, ideals and Institutions. Those who wish to Conserve these things are constrained by traditional values and notions of honesty and truth and those who want to transform have followed a Marxist model that has no internal constraints.
Thus you have a gigantic Cultural struggle that is not only substantive, but where the two sides have completely different tactics. One side is constrained by the Rule of Law and the other is compelled by situational ethics. One side is befuddled that the other side keeps flipping the furniture upside down for no apparent reason, and doesn't quite know how to react, overcome by this adolescent display of shock and awe. The other side is gripped with self-regard and narcissism and has a penchant for destruction for destruction's sake, and enjoys nothing more than shitting in the kitchen of their opponent, so sure are they that they pendulum will never swing back. Except-THE PENDELUM ALWAYS SWINGS BACK.

Like Stalin would say: I only care who count the votes! (diebold).

Because the Demons especially Bozo have been throwing gas on each and every little brush fire in sight. Income inequality, and race cards come flying out their asses at every turn in the road. Taxation is not at the "appropriate levels" for the "rich" for them. To be totally honest about what I have determined about the yeas of Nancy and Harry controlling Congress and Bozo at the helm we are as divided now at a level approaching that of pre-civil war days across the nation.

I would challenge anyone who is normal to reason with a liberal.

gerrymandering districts and 24 hour news networks make it worse.

No doubt. It's warring camps and 24 hour Culture Wars.

Actually no it hasn't. The country now is more polarized than ever and there is plenty if research supporting that.

Well maybe other than the 60s and the civil rights stuff
Posted on 3/22/14 at 8:18 pm to BayouBandit24
And don't forget the American Revolution and the Civil War and the time Chachi broke up with Joanie.

I'm actually hoping we become more polarized. This is nothing compared to the 60s, but the volunteer army has made it so that the sons of the wealthy don't have to worry about dying for something they don't believe in.
The people who volunteer to die are mostly the sons and daughters of the working-class or religious whack jobs so the wealthy don't care about who dies in wars anymore.
If we had a draft we'd have more polarization, but the capitalists in this country have convinced way too many members of the working class to die for them.
