Why is it always assumed that North Korea would hit Seoul with artillery as a first act?

Wouldn't it make more strategic sense for the Norks to target our artillery and other military targets first?

If their soldiers have any kind of belief they could win the fight and survive, why would they target civilian targets over military ones?

I don't know it is assumed, but we are dealing with an insane megalomaniac so you have to assume its on the table.

He might honestly believe tactics are semantics to his eventual victory.

He might sell it as a strategic choice to tie up coalition resources in aid, especially if germ warfare is used.

etc

etc

How could you not assume this would be the first act of North Korea? Anything else would be considered careless and wishful thinking.

From talking to Veterans who have served on the DMZ and perhaps were somewhat informed about the military situation there.

It's the only thing keeping them alive. Its the nation state equivalent of human shield hostage with a gun to the head & the villian saying "If you make a move I'll blow her brains out".

This. They have no hope of their military prevailing in a conventional war, inflicting as much pain on the civilian population of S Korea, China, or Japan is their form of MAD

It is not assumed, that is the only thing that North Korea could do. They can blow their load with an artillery attack on Seoul and then it would be the end of the regime. They are using civilian casualties as leverage ,because we have more military bases we can strike from. If you rob a bank and are outgunned by SWAT are you gonna aim back at them or take a hostage and put a gun to their head?

If conflict actually breaks out that's a given.

One would have to think that the US and South Korean military installations are better protected from artillery than a city. So targeting Seoul gives them the most bang for their buck, when you're in NK's position that is what you want.

Plus, it's what is in range. They have no air force to speak of, and their army lacks mobility. Seoul is what they can reach, therefore Seoul is the target.

Kim and his generals know they would lose the war so they want to rack up as many body bags as possible for the other side.

Plus, I believe our intelligence can show where his stuff is aimed. Satellites, etc. can probably see where his stuff is aimed. Would imagine we can look at type of equipment and tell how far and get a general idea of their aim.

EMP is the right first move, if NK wants to attack the USA.

EMP simultaneously with a nuke strike on South Korea and every US base in range.

That's my 2 cents worth.

And has been since the cease fire or shortly thereafter. What is it, 1/4 million people dead in 30 minutes? We ain't doing nothing to set that shite in motion.....Trump can talk about fir and fury all he wants but if Kim doesn't strike first he has won.....NK is going to be treated like a normal nation.....Saudi Arabia, China, Russia and several others are just as fricked up. China and Russia prevented us from defeating NK the first time around and this was the inevitable result. What is intriguing is what happens as NK is less and less isolated going forward. It's going to hard to trade and interact with the rest of the world keep the populace under Kim's heel......

I could see them lobbing a nuke at Tokyo. Japan treated the Koreans especially harshly during their occupation. The hatred and need for retribution is still very real.

Because it's first act will be it's last, and this threat on civvies is essentially their only move. They're going to make good on it
