Why do we call things 'public' instead of 'government'?

Seems like an attempt at obfuscation.

Public schools - government schools
Public service - government service
Public ROW - government ROW
Etc.

Republic

"Res" - thing
"Publica" - public

A Republican form of government is the authority entity/system owned by the public.

Ever heard of "we the people"?

Just because the people have largely knowingly ceded freedom for security, is no reason to attack the institution.
