The thread on this last week was amusing, with fear mongers posting that everything connected to a battery in the country would be destroyed.

Most folks I know would be lost trying to get by. They're lost after a 'cane when power goes out.

I have never understood this. Probably my nature of never trusting in things I cannot control coupled with the nursing mentality of always having a plan if power goes out, but there really is no excuse for being unable to survive a couple weeks without power.

You can't EMP the entire U.S., especially North Korea.

An EMP on a major city would have the same effect as a pretty bad natural disaster. And while that city was recovering as electrical components are being restored North Korea is being made of glass.

Who here buys that 90% of Americans would be killed within a year of having no electricity?
probably hyperbole but society would definitely collapse without power at this point

Same here, but I think my nature is more a combination of Murphy's Law and/or OCD.

Total BS. The 90% number was pulled from a University of Colorado study about the worst-case effects on the power grid in the event of a Carrington level solar storm. EMP and CME are two totally different animals in terms of effects on electrical grids and their components. Read the Lloyds of London report on insurable loss due to solar activity if you really want an eye-opener.
